I’ve not done enough to remind folks what Mythic Delirium Books has done for the Halloween season — so here’s a start: the new issue of @locusmag.bsky.social (w/ interview w/ STEPHEN KING) holds a STUNNING review of Haralambi Markov’s horror collection THE LANGUAGE OF KNIVES 🎃 bit.ly/SpeakKnives
“In her excellent introduction to Haralambi Markov’s debut collection, The Language of Knives: Stories, Ann VanderMeer compares Markov’s fiction to that of Clive Barker. The likeness lies less in voice or structure—though the grisly ‘The Midnight Feast’ would fit seamlessly into Books of Blood—than in the transgressive, fearless, and intense nature of their fiction. VanderMeer remarks: ‘It’s a delight for me to encounter such formidable prose and storytelling just when I thought I had seen it all.’”
—Ian Mond, Locus

With an image of the Locus Oct 2026 issue cover“I agree. Markov approaches horror and dark fiction without flinching. If a story has a ‘happy ending’ (and few do), that ending has been earned, often brutally. That isn’t to say Markov is gratuitous or that they turn to violence merely to generate tension and shock. What makes these tales so powerful is less the gore and more the emotional ties between the characters, whether it’s the connection between lovers, siblings or, more often, a parent and child . . . I know it’s not all about prizes, but the Bram Stoker and the World Fantasy Awards would be missing a trick if The Language of Knives: Stories wasn’t on their shortlists.”

Reading a lot of these back to school/dorm room renovation posts, and it is clear that a lot of these parents never wanted to raise functional adults. They wanted to raise little toys to give themselves a lifetime of peculiar entertainment.

R.T. is an author I found through Clarkesworld who's always putting out consistent high-grade SF work. If you like his stories also check out his novel, THE GANYMEDAN. I am basic so want to draw comparisons to something like Banks' The Culture but that is prob too superficial. Worth checking out!

Folks, please don’t tell artists they shouldn’t be making or selling their art right now. For many, it’s how they pay the bills. Art is vital during times like this. ALL ART. Whether it’s a protest sign or a book cover or just a beautiful drawing. It’s part of the heart of humanity.

Hey! It's midnight on the east coast, so it's release day. Thanks to @undertow.bsky.social for being such a fantastic publisher. Thanks to family, friends, and fellow writers for their support. The short fic grind has ups and downs, but it's a blast. Fricken love what we do. Thanks for reading.

Something to make you think - from Robert Heinlein.
Against a blue background, the text:
""Sick cultures show a complex of symptoms
such as you have named... but a dying
culture invariably exhibits personal
rudeness. Bad manners. Lack of
consideration for others in minor matters...

This symptom is especially serious in that
an individual displaying it never thinks of
it as a sign of ill health but as proof of
his/her strength".

Ursula le Guin, on the accusation that fantasy is an escape from reality
[“Fantasy is escapist, and that is its glory. If a soldier is imprisoned by the enemy, don’t we consider it his duty to escape? The moneylenders, the know-nothings, the authoritarians have us all in prison; if we value the freedom of the mind and soul, if we’re partisans of liberty, then it’s our plain duty to escape, and to take as many people with us as we can.”]

There's an old story: a boy walks along a beach that's covered w/ stranded starfish. The boy picks one up, throws it back in. Then the next. Someone says "Why bother? You can't save them all. You can't make a difference." The boy throws another back and says "It makes a difference to that one."

The sneaux lived up to its name. Sara and I moved from Boston to New Orleans three years ago to avoid this kind of thing, but we’ve been thrilled seeing the kids, dogs, and cool people enjoying their first real snow storm. Glad I realized at the last minute that I did not get rid of my winter boots.
