I'm generally sympathetic to the need for acronyms to be defined, but since characters are limited on bluesky, the reader has to engage some too. In this case, tapping/clicking on the quoted post, and scrolling to the top of the thread gives the definition of SBE.

The Nobel Committee's scientific reasoning for the prize cites five key discoveries, made by Halzen and the IceCube Collaboration, that were published in @science.org. I had the pleasure of being the editor who handled four of them. Here's a thread of what each of those studies found. ☄️🔭⚛️🧪

Even where info is publicly available, LLMs get details wrong. They are definitely not as reliable as primary sources.

AI thought leaders talking up doom-soon scenarios are desperate to taken as seriously as the scientists who created nuclear weapons, or work with biosafety level 4 organisms.

Also SI.com = Sports Illustrated. SI.edu = the Smithsonian Institution. Nonetheless, I welcome the new initialism as a way for unserious people in the field to self-identify (SI).

Yes, evaluate for sure, if it has benefits of course adopt. "Does it contribute to profitability?" is the ultimate gut check. Problem is, even very smart people can be good at fooling themselves about that question.

I'm generally allergic to hype, which has been fine. Most of the time being a late adopter is more efficient, and you avoid the complete fails and dead-ends. Catching fire is mostly about brand-building I suppose. Nobody cares that you were the first to try Uber in 2011 or whatever.

People I work with get uncomfortable when I use the terms "illegally" or "in violation of statute", in reference to things like this, but it is a simple observation.

Company is mine, so if I do that it ends up being me working Sunday anyway. It was a mistake to get shots in the morning though, made it hard to sleep that night and the next day was even worse. Next time I will go after dinner.

But collectively, the narrow focus on grants to universities is misguided, especially when one accounts for the balance of where the money actually goes (source: NCSES). A plurality of federal R&D funding goes to businesses, followed by internal R&D expenditure, followed by higher education.
Chart outlining the flow of federal R&D obligations to performers. Business received over 69 billion dollars, followed by federal internal at 51 billion, followed by higher education at 44.4 billion. Federally funded research and development centers received 16.3 billion, nonprofits 10.6 billion, and foreign performers 1.1 billion. State and local governments received 795 million.

Kroger-brand fresh-baked chocolate chip muffin. A REAL muffin, with real sugar and real chocolate and... real calories. Some 480 calories, to be exact - almost as many as a McDonald's Big Mac. But MUCH yummier! About 3 inches in diameter. (I'd say more but the drool is making my keyboard too slippery for me to continue!)

I think there's a genetic taste split between wint-o-green and pep-o-mint life savers. I like the 1st and hate the 2nd one. I'm ok with peppermint in general, so it's something in the life savers recipe ruining it. Maybe same for you with their version of wintergreen.

Let's take a minute to 'think about them beans'. Toe beans, that is. Why do some animals have little pink nubs on their feet, while others... don't? Let's start by looking at the-things-between-the-beans minus the fur. Time to look at a Sphynx cat's foot, up close. CW: cannot be UNSEEN.😬

Annoying casual work "AI" chat: the trivial stuff people claim are amazing features of the new tools. e.g. counting things like bolts or pills. There have been algorithms for doing that for decades. There used to be a button on some scales for doing it by weight; it's just division.

This was my favorite - I got to try laser welding. It was fun and relatively easy at least for this simple piece.
A booth with laser welding equipment inside. The windows are yellow due to laser safety filters for observers.A welded part, two pieces of steel joined with one long seam. The seam is about 150mm / 6" long.
