I don’t think I need to convince @chancebonar.bsky.social of this at all but Hermas (even if we know so little about the person) is low key one of the most interesting figures we have pre-3rd c., for many reasons. James Jeffers’s “Conflict at Rome” is a good study but more work to be done on Hermas!

I’m not sure how this is even a question. Yes, scholars should be paid for their labor. Fine, say “we can’t under present conditions,” but if the question is what’s *fair*, that seems pretty obvious!

I don’t know if you endorse the Bovon “useful for the soul” category for the Shepherd but he didn’t seem to apply it or its criteria to Hermas. My opinion, obviously, but I think the Shepherd demands that we reevaluate how we conceptualize the canon’s formation. brill.com/view/journal...
