It’s not an iron dome, it’s a Britannia Shield. There are crucial differences. Mainly around the fact one exists and the other never will.

Badenoch has fallen into the trap that locks parties out of power
Her Tory party is restating all the old ideas voters have rejected, but harder and louder

Voters loathed the Tory party when they booted them out in 2024.They really needed to shake off their disgrace with humility and better ideas. They haven’t. They’ve doubled down. More Brexit, more austerity, more anti-immigration ugliness, more tedious arrogance… and no good reason to vote for them.
Party seems to have learnt nothing from 2024 defeat
John Oxley

The Conservative Party is keen to show it is now ready to return to government, two and a half years after a
historic defeat.Their self-soothing explanation posits that defeat came from not being able to do what they wanted

No such pivot is happening at the current conference. The Tories have come to Birmingham calling for a return to orthodoxy, with similar lines about cutting benefits and regulation. Even so, they seem trapped by the same contradictions
- pledging to cut benefits, but not the winter fuel payments and triple lock on pensions that go to their voters.
There is no "hug-a-hoodie" moment in Birmingham. The Conservative Party is not indicating that it has changed or seeking to broaden its appeal. It is doing the opposite: it is a party returning to its core, restating all the old ideas voters have rejected but louder.

Major distinction between the two. Definitely not a fantasy policy made up on the hoof to get some easy front pages.

Badenoch says the Conservatives do not plan to build a British Iron Dome Badenoch tells Today: “We're not building the Iron Dome... “It's the Britannia Shield. You'll have to speak to the newspapers about that... “The Iron Dome is one type, and... we haven't said that we are replicating that.”

Labour: “We’re going to spend a fiver on feeding sick babies” Tory cheerleaders: “THIS IS INSANE, WHERE IS THE MONEY COMING FROM????” Kemi Badenoch: “Fancy a 10bn iron dome anyone?” Tory cheerleaders: “You’re a genius Kemi, the new Thatcher. Make it 20bn or 30!!” Some country this 😂🤯

The fact the Tories have made zero attempt to understand why they were kicked out and haven’t reflected beyond “we were not Tory enough” is remarkable. The people telling Badenoch she’s doing a good job are not doing them any favours
012
Robert Thomson @robertthomson54.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
They have completely failed to come to terms with why they were booted out and the people desperately deluding themselves that Badenoch is doing a good job aren’t helping them one bit Would be funny if beating Reform wasn’t a serious business

…making the case at the next election “look at America, do you really want that here?” is going to be a powerful argument. That ties in with your crypto bros framing. Farage and Reform have so many weaknesses but everyone runs head-first towards every trap he creates. Which is a consequence of…

Robert Thomson @robertthomson54.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
Wasn’t meaning you personally - within hours it was being conflated with union funding. Exactly the framing Farage wanted. Don’t agree just blocking it is as simple as you say, Reform want to push the “it’s all rigged against us narrative” and that’s the trap. Tying Farage to Trump/MAGA is key…

I hope the Tories finally wake to how existential the next election is for everyone. But sadly with the dimwit Badenoch in charge I can’t see it. They’ll continue to chase Reform, amplify their talking points for them and then wonder why they’ve been completely devoured by them.
000
Robert Thomson @robertthomson54.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
She would be very much the junior partner and Reform is so chaotic no coalition would last. Think a pact is a non-starter tbh. But making political predictions is a mugs game 😂

Robert Thomson @robertthomson54.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
Sensible Tories surely that is their only path to any resurgence at the next election, but they’re led by halfwits. Philp and Badenoch’s Reform-lite strategy is disastrous for everyone

The Tories’ only hope of winning seats is by being palatable to these people in enough areas. But still they allow the odious Chris Philp to run about magnifying Reform’s talking points for them. Make it make sense!

So depressing watching Farage click his fingers and everyone scurries around having the arguments HE wants to frame. At some point people are going to have to learn to stop doing it. It’s madness. BBC having a real lightweight political editor doesn’t help 🤯

My theory is that Harborne (and possibly Delo) are chancing it. They know the donations could be ruled illegal. But it creates a lot of headlines and turns the debate around the elections bill into one of Labour “targeting” Reform UK bylinetimes.com/2026/09/14/w...
