To be honest I actually never thought the northern cod in Canadian waters would come back again in my own lifetime. This is great news! I look forward in the future to a healthy sustainably managed fishery, so that I can enjoy Canadian cod in my fish & chips, as I did in my youth. #cdnenv

The coldroom storage of last fall's apple harvest has run out. I don't see grocery stores carrying Canadian apples anymore, because there aren't any. Would it kill you to go without apples for a month? The shelves are bursting with Canadian peaches, nectarines etc. #BuyLocal #BuyCanada 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦

This isn't new science. I learned this in my undergraduate limnology course (which was taught by Dr. John Smol), and it is spelled out in black and white in hydrological budgets - the vast, vast majority of water in the #GreatLakes is "fossil water", only slowly replenished by annual rainfall.

Scientists determine the Great Lakes are nonrenewable
The Great Lakes hold about 21 percent of the planet's surface fresh water, yet less than one percent of that volume renews each year. That second number, not the first, sets the limits on everyone who...

This will literally kill people here's how... During cold and flu season, pediatric offices are at max capacity. That means an individual provider might see 30-40 patients per day. If you add in extra visits for shots, that just squeezes out slots for sick babies.

I adore you Leon, Egyptologist here, they were built by a largely volunteer force (corvée labor) of 25,000. The builders were very well fed, paid in bread and beer, and received excellent medical care. There was no slavery whatsoever, it is a common misconception.

There's a persistent fantasy that maybe some other nice countries will start mass-hiring US scientists. That's not going to happen. A few high-profile, big name researchers will get poached, sure. But most countries, including some very nice ones, are underemploying their own scientists already.

At the #Costco, they are out of the generic (#Kirkland) brand toilet paper, a small crowd of disgruntled people gathers, staring at the empty floor space where normally the pallet of toilet paper resides. Plenty of Charmin to be had, but ppl are smart, they aren't paying $3 more for 48% less sheets.

Sorry for photo quality, my cell phone camera doesn't have a macro function, for those of you who aren't entomologists, this is the rear-to-rear, or back-to-back, f-ing position in whatever species of insect this happens to be (Google Lens is telling me they are milkweed bugs). #entomology
Two adult milkweed insects getting it on along my garage door, rear-to-rear style (what is the terminology of the human equivalent? Is that position possible? I don't know. That's outside of my experience. I'm not about to go exploring the cesspool of the internet to find out, I don't want to inadvertently download some malware to answer that question for the sake of mere curiousity).

IMPORTANT: The Dutch invested €595 million annually on urban biking, resulting in €19 BILLION saved in public health care costs alone. That’s how smart governments do the math on investing in better mobility. Let’s be clear— it WASTES public money to NOT do it. #CityMakingMath HT @modacitylife.com

I didn’t support Canadian cities bidding on the FIFA World Cup because costs greatly exceed local benefits. But after getting some games, our cities SHOULD try to benefit as much as we can. But with FIFA’s corruption & Trump collaboration, I recommend not giving a dime more to FIFA than we have to.

Pets make great examples to use in intro to evolutionary biology courses, specifically to talk down students from the "vast uniqueness" of humans they might have been taught - for example, we are not the only species capable of the very complex & sophisticated behavior of manipulation and guilt...
Our pet dog is perched at the edge of the dinner table, chin resting on edge, staring imploringly into the eyes of the weakest link in our family, wanting a portion of the steak that has been cooked for dinner.
