Roberto Quinlan @robertoquinlan.bsky.social · 12/09/2026To be honest I actually never thought the northern cod in Canadian waters would come back again in my own lifetime. This is great news! I look forward in the future to a healthy sustainably managed fishery, so that I can enjoy Canadian cod in my fish & chips, as I did in my youth. #cdnenv 141
Roberto Quinlan @robertoquinlan.bsky.social · 12/09/2026But... *but*... it'll be all for naught if DFO capitulates to the cod industry & throws open the gates. I clearly remember the SCL/CCFFR conference at St John's where the plenary speaker showed a modest recovery in cod, at Q&A a fishery rep was frothing that a small limited catch wasn't allowed. 010
Roberto Quinlan @robertoquinlan.bsky.social · 11/09/2026Based on the 2025 $ USD amounts published by the US govt, the analysis doesn't add up, otherwise apparently it only takes a few thousand dollars in lost trade per lost job in the Cdn dairy industry in Toronto & Montreal. 000

Roberto Quinlan @robertoquinlan.bsky.social · 19/08/2026This isn't new science. I learned this in my undergraduate limnology course (which was taught by Dr. John Smol), and it is spelled out in black and white in hydrological budgets - the vast, vast majority of water in the #GreatLakes is "fossil water", only slowly replenished by annual rainfall.earth.comScientists determine the Great Lakes are nonrenewableThe Great Lakes hold about 21 percent of the planet's surface fresh water, yet less than one percent of that volume renews each year. Roberto Quinlan @robertoquinlan.bsky.social · 20/07/2026Come on, a chimichurri consisting only of dried herbs sounds like a prepared mixture from a big plastic tub you can buy from a store. You live near Toronto? I've never been to an Argentinian restaurant in Toronto (mind you,it's been quite a few years now) where the chimichurri wasn't a fresh paste. 100
Roberto Quinlan @robertoquinlan.bsky.social · 19/07/2026I think what *you/we* think of as chimichurri is spicy, and Argentinian chimichurri is not spicy. Nothing Argentinian is spicy. Homemade chimichurri in my house has hot jalapeños in it. 181

Roberto Quinlan @robertoquinlan.bsky.social · 25/06/2026I've been to Spain. Most dwellings there already have heat pumps. Most apt buildings there looked to me like they were built in the 1980s or after, which makes sense given that most growth came after EU membership. This is not the case in France with much older (thicker) brick mortar construction. 200
Roberto Quinlan @robertoquinlan.bsky.social · 25/06/2026Yer an ass. Explain how a long narrow casement window in an apartment dwelling can support a window AC unit. 100
Roberto Quinlan @robertoquinlan.bsky.social · 25/06/2026A 2003 heat wave killed 70,000 people in Europe. Most were elderly. Many victims were found when neighbours reported the smell. When police went in they noted the inside was far hotter than outside. Again, old brick bldgs absorb & retain heat. Know your history before you talk shit like that. 000
Roberto Quinlan @robertoquinlan.bsky.social · 25/06/2026Ok, this is the tweet that finally makes me reply. You are seriously one big ignorant ass. Have you ever actually been to Europe? Do you know its architecture? Old brick buildings absorb heat like an oven. Most windows are casement or awning. There's no "easy" installation of a window AC unit. 220
Roberto Quinlan @robertoquinlan.bsky.social · 25/06/2026It's a not-so-radical idea that the cost of reducing carbon emissions is less than the cost of spending to deal with the effect of ever-increasing climate change impacts. There are obv things that are unavoidable now but the more we spend on the former ASAP the less we will spend on the latter. 110
Roberto Quinlan @robertoquinlan.bsky.social · 25/06/2026I've been to Paris on a 30-C summer day. Again, No. Air. Conditioning. Anywhere. There is no refuge. Anywhere. 1100
