I'm currently mostly doing Listen & Often. It's a podcast we're using to fund new audio comedy like, for eg, James Pond, with David Mitchell, Tamsin Greig, Clare Foster and Rosie Holt.

Look, writers know that everyone else thinks we're a terrible bunch of old whingers whenever we say this stuff, but Audible's blurb for ROBYN AHERN's adaptation of Dracula would be scandalous if it weren't typical: www.audible.co.uk/pd/Bram-Stok...

If you're designing a website for a restaurant, my tip would be: making it easy to find the menu is important, a 30-year breakdown of the founder's original vision and evolving philosophy less important.

I think it's absolutely mad that today there's a *national news story* about 400 oil platform workers losing their jobs, and the government being blamed. 25% of the UK TV industry lost their jobs in the last 4 years and we never hear a peep about it! Some jobs are 'real jobs' I guess.

Slightly amazing James Pond news, when you look at the rest of the Speakies Best Narrative Podcast shortlist (www.radiotimes.com/audio/the-sp...). (You can buy the relevant eps at www.patreon.com/listenandoften, subscribe to the show and find the eps, or subscribe to the James Pond feed on Apple)

Meme: a photo of a cooked lobster on a white background, captioned “Crustacean”. Below it, a photo of Preston’s famous concrete brutalist multi storey car park which also serves as a public transport hub. It has buses outside and is captioned “Bustacean”.

"SAM NEILL
- If you were to commit a murder, how would you do it?
- It's got to be big! No slipping something into someone's drink, that's just pathetic. I'd use a steamroller, just leave a stain on the road. There's probably a couple of people I'd put under a steamroller, but I won't say who they are, otherwise when they see a steamroller coming their way they'll be on full alert. And steamrollers don't go very fast..."

Oh for God's sake, autocorrect. Brian Cant. Seriously, Cent is what you went for? Not Can't? I've just done it again and it went Can't. I refuse to believe it was a typing error, though.

I'm going to ask you to stick with me for this but: it's like finding out that Tony Britton's two sons-in-law were Brian Cent and Rugby player Phil Vickery (about a year before someone told you there was another Phil Vickery and ruined it all).

If only the 250,000 academics and 150,000 total staff with their (hard to estimate, median-ish) £150b contribution to the economy were as valuable as the 6,500 fishermen and 30,000 total fishing chain employees and their £1b. (Theatre's crappy old 250,000 workers are obviously a lost cause)

Couldn't agree more, about Liverpool and Arsenal. (I am that Liverpool fan, by the way. I don't use 'our' for a genuinely funny reason that I would tell you privately if you wanted to know it. I know it's funny because I am a professional in the field.)

Now imagine being a Liverpool fan marinading in world where seemingly no one remembers their last two titles were won after summers of despair fuelled by LFC's failure to buy anyone.

The column inches and engagement online produced by VAR - measurables in a media economy that needs them - is what makes VAR irresistible. Every anti-VAR podcast is an economic argument for VAR. (I don't think the cynicism is this direct, exactly, but I think this is huge and real.)

I think it's one of the most destructive periods of recent history. I also think that's because of social media, foreign interference, AI and Trump, not Starmer. Sure, he's got flaws, and a genius might have been able to stand against that, but I don't want a political system that needs geniuses!

Plus 2: and while we're on the subject of things people find boring: iIt takes forever to change anything in the real world and the fact that social media and podcasts don't operate on that timescale doesn't change it

The thing Trump's Presidency shows (like, er, let's just say 'other historical autocrats who he is not the same as') is that big business likes to think it's more powerful than power, and sometimes lots of people think it is. But power is more powerful than big business.

Of all my various guesses, and I'm in sixth forms a lot, this is the main reason that sixth formers' written English is so bad. It's really, really bad. Much worse than you think, even from reading this (I mean, why would you believe me). Marking systems are designed to hide how bad it is.

The more of the Pope's AI encyclical that I read, and the bits about truth, lies and power, the clearer it becomes that he's not just listening to Rossum's Universal Robots, but also to: www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m...
bbc.co.uk
BBC Radio 3 - Drama on 3, Magnitsky the Musical

I'm not saying the Pope's encyclical about the meaning of life and AI was just an extended gloss on our robot musical because that's not for me to say: www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m...

Musical drama. Robots reason that the planet is in peril and it's up to them to save it.

It's the attention economy monetising outrage that's the oxygen source. I think it again and again and again again. It sort of started with 24 hour news, but addictive social media is the cancer, and the people who made it know it. It's a Sackler level crime

Oh, no reason.
The trouble with you, Spode, is that just because you have succeeded in inducing a handful of half-wits to disfigure the London scene by going about in black shorts, you think you're someone. You hear them shouting 'Heil, Spode!' and you imagine it is the Voice of the People. That is where you make your bloomer.
What the Voice of the People is saying is: 'Look at that frightful ass Spode swanking about in footer bags! Did you ever in your puff see such a perfect perisher?
