“The ideas will always matter.” A standout moment from digital art pioneer @roberthodgin.bsky.social, in conversation with Pablo Honey at last night’s dev/ai/nyc. Here are a few favorite snaps from their conversation on art in the age of AI. 🗽

Can't wait! Should be a fun, occasionally depressing, dystopian hoot. Looking forward to the chat!

I tried once but couldn't sort out the logic and it kept doing weird things when going from one painting to another. I should give it another try though because that would great to see.

Dust. Exploring subtle installation experiences. Always loved seeing dust motes floating in sun beams so I decided to try and reproduce that experience in TouchDesigner using Josef Pelz's T3D (Texture 3D operators) as well as PCR (Point Cloud Rendering) for GLSL bokeh effects.

Pure R&D, with a focus on novel and evocative lighting. It's more about the mood than the clarity of the framed image (for now). Video coming in the next day or two.

* Runs at 60fps * Subdivision logic is handled in Python * Webcam input is used as a super subtle glass reflection * Using MidJourney AI images for the content because of convenience only, this is not an attempt to showcase gen AI outputs. I needed 256 images that were thematically related.

Real-time prototype of my "Infinite Frames" Houdini setup. Ever since I first made it, I wanted to see it run at interactive framerates. #TouchDesigner makes it really easy to do initial prototyping and look-dev for interactive projects we will build out in Cinder C++.

I know, right??? And they borked it at some point because now it doesn't even seem to react to music anymore. It's definitely worse than it used to be.

I wrote a little primer on rigid body dynamics in Houdini after seeing a lot of similar questions online. Bullet is a pretty deep rabbit hole to fall into and there's a lot of legacy stuff that's very confusing for new artists... hopefully this helps you get started! www.toadstorm.com/blog/?p=1123

Reminder to creatives (or anyone, really): If someone reaches out because they want to interview you, and they are asking you to download a specific app to conduct the interview, it is probably a scam. I have had 3 attempts since January 2025. Do your research and check credentials.

I should mention, I didn't take the photo. It was on Reddit but the OP deleted their account so I can't credit them. The only photo I have of it is back before decent camera-phones.

In total, over 400 prints were sold over 4 runs. The physical prints were a challenge to make cost effective, since print shops aren't too keen on offering discounts for 1-of-1 print series, and each print I sold was unique. Luckily, my friends at @nervo.us were able to help me out.

It is the 4 year anniversary of the first run of Meander river prints. It remains my favorite project to date (actually, maybe its a tie between this and the Planetary iPad app from 2011 roberthodgin.com/project/plan... ... okay maybe a 3-way tie with Magnetosphere)
