Prohibition of drugs doesn’t stop young people wanting or getting them. It DOES prevent us from giving them accurate information about why they might be tempted to use these drugs and what the potential harms are though. It can also delay them seeking help. www.theguardian.com/society/2026...

2026 gave us more butterflies on Dutch Butterfly Monitoring transects than 2023 and 2024 (these years were the worst since 1990), and a little bit more than 2025, especially in August. But beware of shifting baseline, numbers in most years in the 1990s were often twice as high as nowadays.

Some good research highlighted in this article in the @theguardian.com www.theguardian.com/environment/... But being close to green space is only part of the story. Even if you are within 15 mins of green space there may still be barriers that dtop you using it.

Well done Naomi Addleton on finding a Holly Blue larva feeding on Erica cinerea (Bell Heather) in the New Forest. This is the first record of the use of this foodplant in the UK. Just look how pink the larva is - perfectly matching the plant! And a Lasius ant to boot!

4. Green space and water Parks and public spaces are a really important part of high streets. Without them, there’s little reason or opportunity for people to congregate. It’s really worth investing in and maintaining them. Also make use of rivers - most towns have them, even if underground!

The UK will experience a partial solar eclipse on Wednesday 12 August. The extent of the Sun's coverage and the timing of maximum obscuration will differ across the country. Never look directly at the sun; use a pinhole projector or certified eclipse glasses to view it.

A map of the UK for showing the total rainfall amount for the 1 - 30 July 2026 compared with the average for the full month. 
You would normally expect a total of around 97% of average at this point in the month, but the UK is currently tracking its third driest July on record with only 35% of average rainfall. 

England and Wales have seen less than 20% of their average rainfall for the month.
