on #Dartmoor today a mother and calf with matching white stripes
a calf in the foreground very close to its mother, and beyond are the rolling green hills of Dartmoor. BUt the funny thing about the cows is that they are each black a broad vertical white stripe and their individual stripes are almost overlapping as one

The story of Jason Arday is the story of James Orr. Of the ideology which has found a foothold in Cambridge University, fostering the sorts of ideas that formed the undercurrents – sometimes explicit; sometimes unconscious – against Arday. I returned to my alma mater for an in-depth exploration 👇

Neoliberals have neutered direct state investment in infrastructure. Everything is privatised, state guarantees profits. UK languishes at or near the bottom of the OECD league for investment in productive assets. China invests over 41% of its GDP in productive assets, India 34.3%, UK 17.9%.

some of my potatoes are smaller than my tomatoes. I had convinced myself that the spuds had all dried out in the heatwave and/or been dug up and eaten by rats. Dug 'em up and they're fine, except not ready. This farming, albeit of only four plants in total, is harder than it looks.
on a green table in the foreground sits a red and silver colander within which are some freshly picked potatoes; beside the colander are three potatoes ranging from tiny to large and four tomatoes (two red and two yellow). In the middle ground is a stone bank and in the distance some high moorland

spent a day in #St Ives, in #Cornwall, where reality bends with the waves. In the museum was Tiny the dog. Is it for real, I asked a volunteer; up to you, she said. And, in the Mine Beer bar, was a diagram mapping an underworld of ale. Mmm, said the barman. Some things are too good not to be true.
A notice saying the world's most wonderful embalmed dog, with a full description, and a glass presentation globe with what looks like the model of a very small brown and white dog within it.The whole thing looks ike a fake from another eraa hand drawn diagram entitled the hidden world beneath mine brewing company, showing an entirely made-up world of beer being brewed in an old mining building then piped down old shafts to the bar

what a bizarre experience - went out to a suitable spot with the colander and found another half dozen people doing the same. Lots of chat and laughs and, of course, the eclipse. Learnt two things as well: how to spell colander, and that ours was better than anyone else's.

I'm starting to edit a book for someone this week, stumbled across this image, and reminded myself that I promised we'd be using track changes. It's a page of corrections by James Joyce ('placed within the history of Joyce’s early serial publication of Finnegans Wake') uwm.edu/libraries/sp...
a page of printed words covered in hand-drawn lines and arrows with copious notes scribbled in the margin, adding up to a sense of intense amendments being made. It's a real mess.

BBC has since changed this but really it should have from the start read ‘Convicted stalker grabbed woman’s hair etc…’ and it makes one wonder if there’s a senior editor checking stuff before it goes out.The real story is an utterly different one compared to that suggested by the initial headline.

aren’t we falling into the same journalistic trap with JD Vance that we did with Trump? We make headlines out of anything he says because he’s powerful, even when what he says is so factually flawed that it doesn’t deserve our consideration. These guys know that, and we’re being played.

I’m finding this kind of stuff increasingly annoying. Yeah it’s important, and deserves a current affairs slot, but in real life I still know very few people who are bothered about it. They’re mostly just living their lives, not wondering about the nature of national identity.

BBC World at One opens with the voice of Farage effectively urging a riot by making wildly untrue generalisations about race. They could have opened with the voice of the police chief who had to deal with Farage’s mob. There’s a presentational choice there, and no need for Daily Mail headlines.
