The gate of Bishamontang, Emissary Santo, Yamashina District, Kyoto City
Framed by a blazing canopy of Japanese maples (momiji), a steep stone pathway (chokushimichi) rises toward a dark wooden gate, its steps completely buried beneath a thick carpet of scarlet foliage. Slender bamboo handrails flank the stone stairs, leading the eye along a dramatic linear perspective toward the imperial messenger gate at the crest of the slope. Overhead, interlocking branches filter the light, casting a warm crimson glow over the damp stone and moss-covered embankments. The scene evokes an intimate sensory atmosphere: the crisp mountain air of a Kyoto morning, the faint scent of damp moss and aged cedar, the soft crunch of fallen leaves underfoot, and the profound, reverent hush of an ancient temple precinct.
Located at Bishamon-do Temple in the Yamashina District of Kyoto, this approach—known as the chokushimichi (Imperial Messenger Path)—is renowned for its late-autumn sando (shrine approach), where fallen leaves form an iconic momiji no jūtan (maple carpet). Originally founded in 703 AD by the monk Gyōki and re-established at its present site in 1665, Bishamon-dō is a distinguished monozeki temple (traditionally presided over by members of the imperial family or high nobility). The Chokushimon Gate at the top of the stairs was reserved for official imperial envoys, reflecting the sanctuary's esteemed lineage. The seamless integration of stone masonry, timber architecture, and natural forest contours reflects the supreme craft of Japanese zōen (landscape architecture) and monozukuri (artisanal mastery), designed to celebrate the subtle shifts of the seasonal calendar.

The kimono features an elegant composition of ume (plum blossom) branches gracefully cascading across the cream-colored damask ground, painted with the sophisticated yuzen resist-dyeing technique combined with pigment dyes. Last quarter, 20th century, Japan
This rinzu silk furisode represents a beautiful fusion of traditional Japanese textile artistry with the naturalistic aesthetic that has long characterized Japanese decorative arts. The kimono features an elegant composition of ume (plum blossom) branches gracefully cascading across the cream-colored damask ground, painted with the sophisticated yuzen resist-dyeing technique combined with pigment dyes. The artistic treatment evokes the classical Japanese painting tradition of kachō-ga (bird-and-flower painting), where natural subjects are rendered with both botanical accuracy and poetic sensibility.

The plum blossom motifs carry profound symbolic meaning in Japanese culture, representing resilience, hope, and the promise of spring, as plum trees are among the first to bloom despite harsh winter conditions. This symbolism makes them particularly appropriate for furisode, which are worn by young unmarried women during significant life celebrations. The flowing, organic arrangement of the branches demonstrates the Japanese aesthetic principle of asymmetrical balance, creating movement and vitality across the garment's surface. The damask background, with its subtle woven patterns of flowers and butterflies, adds textural depth while complementing the painted elements. The overall design reflects the continuing influence of the Rinpa school's stylized naturalism, updated for late 20th-century sensibilities while maintaining the essential elegance and symbolic richness of classical Japanese decorative arts.

Located in Nagano Prefecture, Matsumoto Castle—famously nicknamed Karasu-jō ("Crow Castle") for its striking black cladding—is one of Japan’s twelve surviving original keeps (genson tenshu) and a designated National Treasure.
Rising majestically out of early morning mists, the five-tiered keep (tenshu) of Matsumoto Castle casts a near-flawless inverted reflection across the glassy surface of its surrounding moat. The bold contrast between dark, lacquered wooden wainscoting and stark white plaster tiers gives the fortress an imposing visual gravity, illuminated by the diffuse, golden-blue light of dawn. In the foreground, two white swans glide effortlessly through the dark water, their gentle wake sending delicate ripples that softly distort the mirrored silhouette of the ancient timber tower. The scene invokes an immersive sensory landscape: the crisp, chilly mountain air of Nagano, the soft lapping of water against stone foundations, the faint scent of damp pine needles and morning fog, and the profound, reverent hush of a historic stronghold awakening to the day.
Originally founded during the late Sengoku period and significantly expanded in the 1590s under Ishikawa Kazumasa and his son Yasunaga, it stands as one of the finest surviving examples of a flatland castle (hirajiro). Uniquely, the architectural complex joins a heavily fortified wartime keep with an open, red-balustraded moon-viewing pavilion (Tsukimi-yagura) added during the peaceful 1630s, physically charting Japan’s transition from feudal warfare to Edo-period stability. The structure exemplifies supreme monozukuri (artisanal mastery and structural craft), featuring complex interlocking timber joinery, mortarless stone wall construction (anozumi), and protective black lacquer wainscoting engineered to withstand both harsh weather and siege warfare.

Yabusame’ mounted archery, an old warrior tradition in Japan
Frozen in mid-gallop against a soft blur of dust and greenery, a Yabusame archer rises with fluid grace from the saddle of a white charger, drawing a towering asymmetrical longbow (yumi) with absolute focus. Clad in traditional Kamakura-period hunting attire (hitatare) patterned in vibrant emerald green and gold brocade, the marksman wears spotted deer-hide chaps (mukabaki) and a wide, black-rimmed hat (igasa) secured beneath the chin. A blunt, turnip-headed wooden arrow (kabura-ya) rests aligned with his steady gaze, held at full draw as horse and rider thunder down the course. The contrast between the muscular power of the white horse, the crisp geometric line of the drawn string, and the fluttering patterned sleeves creates a high-stakes sensory moment: the thundering beat of hooves, the rushing wind, and the held breath before the release.
abusame (流鏑馬) is an ancient Japanese ritual of mounted archery dating back to the late Heian and early Kamakura periods (12th century), codified under Shogun Minamoto no Yoritomo to cultivate samurai discipline, mental focus, and spiritual devotion. Performed as a sacred rite at Shinto shrines, the archer must shoot three wooden targets in rapid succession while galloping down a narrow, two-hundred-meter track. The arrow's bulbous wooden tip—known as a whistle-arrow—produces a high-pitched hum as it cuts through the air, signaling a prayer for peace and driving away evil spirits. The creation of the archer's specialized gear, from the laminated bamboo bow and eagle-feather arrows to hand-woven silk brocades and custom leatherwork, represents a living continuum of monozukuri (artisanal mastery and material craft), where feudal military tradition is preserved as sacred performance art.

"The Flapper and the Cat" (or associated with his works for La Vie Parisienne) by artist Chéri Hérouard (C. Hérouard) a celebrated French illustrator famous for his Art Deco style. Year: 1923.
The illustration depicts an elegant woman dressed in a flowing, classic Art Deco style gown and a stylized headscarf. She gently holds up a sleek black cat to her face while surrounded by floating, stylized autumn holly leaves against a warm, gold-toned background. The piece embodies the graceful, playful, and romantic aesthetic characteristic of early 20th-century French magazine illustrations.

"Red Rose" by artists Anna and Elena Balbusso.
A striking surrealist illustration blending human anatomy with botany. A stylized woman's face peers out from the blooming center of a vibrant red rose, while a thorny green stem acts as her neck and large leaves stretch across her chest to mirror garments or shoulders. The piece utilizes textured, multi-layered digital and hand-painted application techniques characteristic of the artists.

"A Song of Spring" (German: Frühlingsreigen) by artist Maximilian Lenz (Austrian, 1860–1948), a founding member of the Vienna Secession. Year: 1913.
This oil-on-canvas masterpiece blends Symbolism and Art Nouveau. It features five ethereal young women dressed in vibrant purple gowns, adorned with floral crowns, dancing gracefully hand-in-hand around a central maypole beneath a lush canopy of blooming wisteria. The painting captures themes of rebirth, fertility, and the cyclical renewal of life. The dancers' freeform, flowing body movements were strongly inspired by the legendary American dancer Isadora Duncan, who stayed in Vienna in 1904 and championed a liberated approach to dance.

You might wonder why I’m not shocked about the outcome of the C19 Inquiry resulting in C19 being downgraded to the “who cares if we spread it” category. We’ve been living that reality for years. I thought they already had it in writing somewhere, around the same time it became BSL-2.
