Friday evening & I’m feeling good. My body feels used from the physical work I’ve done today. My plans are working out - more on this later. I’m a bit tipsy from a large G&T & we’re just waiting on a take away delivery. Happy weekend BlueSkyers. 🍻

This was this tree guy’s first attempt at spiking. Full supervision from the team lead below, who prepped the trunk in advance so he could have a go. I sent him my pics so he could show his mum. He did a good job. I hope she’s proud. 😁

With the conifers gone the composting area is being re jigged. I also need to get my big orange shredder out again.

A big day. The 2 large conifers that provided a screen at the bottom of our garden since we moved here have gone. The ceanothus, the fig tree, & the acer are now large enough to take over that role. They & other plants in this part of the garden will now receive the light & moisture they need.

Our waterfall and pond have been pretty much neglected for the last 12 months. Gave it some proper TLC this morning. Had forgotten how lovely it is sitting beside it, the sun on my back, just watching and listening to the moving water. #peace

Our pyracantha put on an incredible display of blossom this year. The berries for the birds this winter are now developing nicely.

Very lazy Solheim Cup Sunday with various family members coming & going. 6 + a dog currently here. Our German nephew is cooking his special curry for dinner. If it tastes as good as it smells… 🤤Just took a stroll round the garden. There is still plenty of colour out there.

A couple more days without visiting the plot & another harvest to gather today. Toms & beets & I dug a few potatoes to top up the stash at home. The plot is gradually closing down for the winter.

This morning the county council contractors are finally fixing the potholes in our road. The road is fully closed off - no-one in & no-one out. Can’t really moan as it needs doing, but choosing bin day was probably not the best idea. ☕️

After a full day of rain yesterday my drainage pond on the allotment actually has water in it. That’s the first time in 2016!

It has literally rained steadily for probably 12 hours & it’s still going. The rain gauge says over 25mm so far. This is the first proper, penetrating rain we’ve had in months. And breathe…

Just back from Barney’s 6 monthly health check at the vets. Apparently we are amazing dog owners & have a super fit wonder dog as a pet. I think she liked him. He cleared her out of treats during his appointment. Greedy mutt. 😂

At last… at last, some proper rain. It’s steady, very wetting & forecast to continue for hours. Hopefully it will give us far more than the few mm we’ve had to date. 🤞

Just watching Essex Highways discharging tarmac from a truck straight into the potholes in our road. Tamped down then rolled. No surface prep work at all. I’m not an expert in this area but that seems like a very short term solution. What’s the betting we’ll need it done again in a few months?

2mins of vigorous rainfall just now. The first since the 23mm we received a week or so ago over a 5 day period. It’s so frustrating to look at the rainfall radar map & watch the rain blobs fizzle out just before they reach us. We still need so much more. 🤷🏼‍♂️💦🙏

Just got out latest energy statement. The best month yet following the installation of solar panels, heat pump & additional insulation. We owe them £1.86 & that’s because we still have a gas hob. If it had just been electricity we would have been in credit inc standing meter charges. 😁 Happy Monday.

With another 6mm of overnight rain to add to the 7mm from the other day, plus a forecast bucketful to come today, next week I might be able to force a fork into the earth in my garden.

I’m realising that the constant drip drip from a section of the conservatory gutter on to the window cill is rather annoying. Will have to give it a look once it stops raining. 🌧️⛈️💦

Have taken the decision to have these 2 conifers taken down. They’ve screened us from neighbours since we moved in. I planted a fig on the left, a ceanothus in the middle & an acer on the right that make a more attractive screen & the removal of the conifers will give them light & room to develop.
Tree trunks & compost binsThe conifers are at the back & slightly taller.

I thought I was in for a bumper potato crop this year. The first & second earlies have been really good & the Maris Peer & King Edward’s have had strong, healthy top growth. Dug a few roots of the latter 2 today & am pretty disappointed. Lack of rain is clearly the problem despite regular watering.

A nice little haul gathered after our holiday. Katy has used a lot of water in the tunnel while we were away. My corn has taken a bashing in the heat though. I picked the only potentially usable cobs. The plants have gone brittle despite having gallons of water on them over recent weeks.

We’ve been away for the week with grand children. We had rain on the Sussex coast but there’s been none here. Fortunately we had someone in to water our pots. A lovely allotment neighbour also offered to water on my plot. It wasn’t much to look at before we went. 🤞for tomorrow.

We’ve had no rain for weeks. The trees are clearly suffering. A hosepipe ban came in this week meaning I can no longer fill my on plot water tank from the allotment site tank using a hose & battery pump. I can’t carry water that far. There is no rain in the forecast for Aug. This looks like the end.

We've just had what we never have at home these days... don't get excited now... we had a lie in. We had to come to a lodge on the Cambridgeshire fens for it, but it's 08.50 on a Saturday morning and we're only just up. Lovely! 😊

Just had a critique back on the first 4 chapters of my first book. I’m blown away. The responder has understood exactly what I was trying to do, applauds my characterisation & storytelling but is rightly critical of elements that also concerned me. Lots to think about. 📖

Started the day cutting back the Wisteria tentacles that sprout everywhere & look like a wild hairstyle. Sorted the home compost heap. Then to the plot for more watering & to dig some Pink Fir Apple pots for dinner.

SO many butterflies flitting back & forth across the garden this morning. Some varieties that I’ve not seen here before. I think the constantly running water on our water feature also helps attract them.

Battling with a spiky pyracantha is dangerous. Ours, in the back corner behind the fig tree collapsed right across this area in the winter. It’s now upright & supported again. 20+ fig shoots from the roots also removed. Then to the plot to water & gather a small harvest. Our first beetroot.
