1/2 Our team recently snapped these photos of #sphagnum mosses growing in re-wetted areas nr Holme Moss. Sphagnum mosses can hold up to 20x their own weight in water, helping to hold water on the hills in times of both dry weather and extreme rainfall. #Peatlands #SouthPennines #SphagnumMoss

We definitely need more rain 🙏🏻💦 however it is good to see that our work is helping to keep the hills wet. Slowing the flow of water is especially important in prolonged dry weather, but is also important after heavy rain as it can reduce erosion 😊 #peatland

It is still dry as a bone out there. On intensively managed #Peatlands, even Sphagnum struggles. The water table is way too low. We need to restore these landscapes to make them more resilient to climate change. #GreatNorthBog #SphagnumMonday #ClimateChange

A swarm of marsh-orchids in a Bure valley fen. Once good for Fen Narrow-leaved Marsh-orchid Dactylorhiza praetermissa ssp schoenophila (or whatever it’s called this week), but now largely consumed by the Southern Marsh pop, likely due to fen drying bringing the sspp closer. Butterflies too.

Branched Bur-reed (Sparganium erectum) in full flower today in the New Forest. It was striking that the early-season flowers had failed to set in the cool spell we had, but the current ones are producing fruit.

After the wildfire near the Snake Pass summit at the beginning of May, our science team returned to the site to check on the sphagnum plugs we planted in the area over the winter. While our plastic monitoring equipment had melted in the heat of the fire, 98% of the sphagnum plugs didn't burn away.
