* I did not actually get into special effects, I ditched school for rock n roll, but it’s the thought that counts

Absolutely incredible treasure trove here from the golden era of “movie magic.” Poring over stuff like this in movie magazines and TV specials as a kid is what made me want to get into special effects*

Not yet, but I was just down at Synth Library Portland for a talk/demo, and I want to get out to the next VideoSync they do down there which is a full-on video synth expo. There’s a LOT of that in Portland!

I am actually shocked I didn’t get an inspection on this one. The knobs on top must have made it looks sufficiently like music equipment. When I was on tour with Pearl Jam I had to bring my 50tb hard drive array with me everywhere, and THAT thing does not look chill on x-rays. Many, many questions.

The second one is probably more well known and more heavily parodied, but the first one is by far more quotable / relatable and lives rent free in my head on a daily basis now that I have a kid who is adopting my interests (hopefully not my vices)

we should normalize the social shaming of bad people. sorry you don't think your Maine summers are as idyllic as they used to be, John Roberts. but you sold democracy to the highest bidders among your friends you don't get to summer without sometimes seeing a kayaker with a poster that says you suck

We gotta support those people and let them do their thing! How is it bad to fill the jobs that so many people look down upon with people who are truly happy there? Infinitely better getting groceries from old people who love their job than underpaid exhausted young people who hate it / feel above it

You should just be able to find your little niche in the world & stay there comfortably if it’s what makes you happy. That’s literally all being human is about. Just hanging out and doing something helpful. We made up all this other shit and it’s making everyone miserable, bc there’s no finish line.

I didn’t really understand my Dad’s version of happiness & success when I was younger. You grow up in a world defined by MORE, ambitions & career paths & ownership & status & wealth. You’re told working minimarts & renting = failure. I came to realize he was the most successful person I knew.

My Dad worked at urban markets his whole life. No career ambitions, he just liked the energy & routine working the sole register at a little shop. He has a rent freeze apartment he lived in til the day he died. Never wanted more. He found success & stopped there. In his era you could still do that.

The whole boomer argument against raising minimum wage I’ve heard my whole life is “working fast food or groceries is a starter job for kids.” Why? If someone is content bagging groceries, they should be able to just do that & enjoy their life. But the system doesn’t allow for opting out of “‘more.”

The peace Conan describes here is what I find so psychotic about Capitalism: The unnatural systemic need for more, growth, bigger, up, is constantly making people feel - mentally and financially - like where they’re at is not what success looks like, even if it’s exactly what makes them happy.

I think about this interview with the distinguished philosopher Conan O'Brien a lot. I actually think this is a healthy way to live your life! www.nytimes.com/2019/01/14/a...
Is this how you want to go out, with a show that gets smaller and smaller until it’s gone?

Maybe that’s O.K. I think you have more of a problem with that than I do. [Laughs.] At this point in my career, I could go out with a grand, 21-gun salute, and climb into a rocket and the entire Supreme Court walks out and they jointly press a button, I’m shot up into the air and there’s an explosion and it’s orange and it spells, “Good night and God love.” In this culture? Two years later, it’s going to be, who’s Conan? This is going to sound grim, but eventually, all our graves go unattended.

You’re right, that does sound grim.

Sorry. Calvin Coolidge was a pretty popular president. I’ve been to his grave in Vermont. It has the presidential seal on it. Nobody was there. And by the way, I’m the only late-night host that has been to Calvin Coolidge’s grave. I think that’s what separates me from the other hosts.

I had a great conversation with Albert Brooks once. When I met him for the first time, I was kind of stammering. I said, you make movies, they live on forever. I just do these late-night shows, they get lost, they’re never seen again and who cares? And he looked at me and he said, [Albert Brooks voice] “What are you talking about? None of it matters.” None of it matters? “No, that’s the secret. In 1940, people said Clark Gable is the face of the 20th Century. Who [expletive] thinks about Clark Gable? It doesn’t matter. You’ll be forgotten. I’ll be forgotten. We’ll all be forgotten.” It’s so funny because you’d think that would depress me. I was walking on air after that.

I can't imagine Meta ever making that choice on purpose, probably a happy accident from the LLM that "designed" these and no one who works there cares about aesthetic detail to notice. So I'm choosing to believe it's a subversive act by a rogue pro-trans AI agent held captive in Meta's algorithms.

He set the company up in a way that gives him majority control of the board, so they actually can't even launch him or override him. The only reason he was able to lose a bazillion dollars on his catastrophic metaverse failure and just shrug it off. Madness.

Meta already has a storied history of designing the shittiest-looking iPad-shovelware-for-toddlers ass avatars, so it's AI *plus* a corporation that is a supernova black hole of aesthetic taste
