Updated this piece on the difference between civic tech and DOGE to reflect new reporting on how DOGErs are monetizing their connections to Silicon Valley. This is the worst example: the DOGErs who blocked USAID life-saving aid have a $1.4B defense startup. donmoynihan.substack.com/p/doge-vs-ci...
Let me give just one example. DOGErs Luke Farritor and Gavin Kliger were DOGErs. Farritor had a tech background, but failed an interview to be hired by the US Digital Service. They quickly amassed extraordinary power despite a lack of government experience. They also chose to kill people. I’m not exaggerating. The Washington Post reports that Farritor and Kliger overrode orders to keep life-saving aid from USAID flowing. They literally flipped the switches in a kill chain.

Several times, USAID managers prepared packages of these payments and got the agency’s interim leaders to sign off on them with support from the White House. But each time, using their new gatekeeping powers and clearly acting on orders from Musk or one of his lieutenants, Farritor and Kliger would veto the payments — a process that required them to manually check boxes in the payment system one at a time, the same tedious way you probably pay your bills online.

So what are they doing now? Making money. Kliger was chief data officer of DOD and is joining the wave of tech firms moving into the defense business, where a willingness to build kill chains is a plus, not a minus. From the Washington Post, which detailed a wave of DOGE-based start-ups:

The start-ups include a host of firms focused on cybersecurity and defense technology, as well as ventures dedicated to helping businesses across America deploy artificial intelligence tools. Among the largest is Cathedral, an AI-enabled cybersecurity firm, founded by Gavin Kliger and Luke Farritor. Valued by investors at $1.4 billion, Cathedral aims to sell to both corporate America and government agencies, including the Pentagon, according to a person familiar with the business, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the firm has not made its operations public.

“Wait Brockon is super dangerous? Huh. No, no, I just didn’t expect that considering the violent crime rate for all of Mass is lower than New Orleans but maybe that’s old data.”

4. DOGE officials were told datasharing under certain conditions was illegal. The most obvious is IRS data. Need an act of Congress to share. They did not care.
Everyone in the agency knew that its data was valuable. That was the reason for the strict laws that prevented it from being exploited for profit or political gain. “He said this in a way that he expected everyone to clap when he was done,” said Kathleen.

“No one said a word.” The people around the table – a group that included a woman who had worked at the IRS for 54 years, or 53 years and 50 weeks longer than Gavin Kliger – looked down, or away. Kathleen felt embarrassed for Gavin Kliger. But now it was clear what the meeting was about. Gavin wanted, in his words, “to explore how we can share our data with other agencies”.

Interestingly, he never once mentioned Ice or DHS. Instead, that week, he sought to share data with himself, by trying to access files detailing IRS contracts with outside consultants that also contained taxpayer information. Kathleen denied him access.

The bright side to these people that want to pretend Massachusetts is stuck in a 1973 crime wave is that they get really theatrically mad if you act confused about why they would think you’d be scared of say, Fall River.

It’s so under discussed in the no contact convos, but it permeated a lot- even liberal churches. It encourages doubling down too: the program can’t fail, but only be failed. If you manage to see that is bs, then you have to admit you listened to the wrong people & your kids were just being kids.

It’s amazing that their “kids aren’t really people undergoing normal developmental stages, but extensions of you that are trying to manipulate you into letting them run feral-but follow these magical rules to fix them and show everyone you are the best parent” ran into problems when kids grew up.

… period pain, inability to start work, drama with family, etc. etc. and people who are in the extreme don’t realize that when we say period hurt we don’t mean not moving for days, or family conflict means your sister stealing your clothes not your parents hating you. And that’s probably why…

Like yes, everyone has intrusive thoughts, like what if I drove the car off the bridge? But it’s not normal to not be able to move past it, or spin out the scenario, or change how you drive to prevent it. We use the same words to describe situations that could range from mild to extreme:

The internet has its problems, and people that are self diagnosed is one of them (not applicable if you can’t afford therapy, but don’t parade yourself as expert/suffering from everything), but part of the reason we’re seeing increases is people finding out their normal isn’t normal-

My gosh. Mike Huckabee's top aide: —Covered up an embassy report on Israeli killings of 9 Americans —Fabricated Orwellian reports on Israeli settler violence & the "Gaza Humanitarian Foundation" to make it sound good for Israel —Questioned staff on whether they were “pro-Israel” or “pro-Hamas”
In late March, at the height of the Iran war, Israel quietly approved more settlements in the Israeli-occupied West Bank than it ever had at one time.
Staff members at the United States Embassy in Jerusalem saw the move as potentially flouting one of President Trump's explicit red lines for Israel - no annexation of the West Bank - and drafted an urgent report intended for policy makers in Washington.
That memo never reached Washington. It was quashed by David Milstein, a top aide to Ambassador Mike Huckabee, according to three U.S. officials briefed on the process.
This was no isolated incident.
Since taking up his post in April 2025, Mr. Milstein, 36, has repeatedly suppressed or significantly revised embassy reporting on Israeli activities to present the Netanyahu government in a favorable light, according to a dozen people who work with or interact with Mr. Milstein in both Jerusalem and Washington:
• As settler violence in the West Bank surged in the spring, for instance, he stymied embassy reporting suggesting that the Israeli government was failing to take action, according to the three officials. Instead the embassy sent a cable to Washington, viewed by The New York Times, praising Israel for "cracking down" on the attacks.
• When members of Congress pushed for accountability over the killings of nine Palestinian Americans by Israeli settlers and security forces, he suppressed a detailed report that the embassy staff had written, effectively stonewalling lawmakers' efforts to gain information, according to multiple officials briefed on the matter.Mr. Milstein rewrote the cable to declare GHF's operation a success while overlooking the mass casualties, according to people who saw the cable and were briefed on the editing process.
Troubled by glaring discrepancies between news coverage and the embassy's official reports, White House and State Department officials seeking a clearer picture of events bypassed standard channels at least twice to communicate directly with embassy staff, according to two officials briefed on the outreach and an internal communication from late this summer seen by The Times.
Veteran American diplomats said that withholding or twisting the information sent to Washington should raise serious concerns.
"The embassy ought to tell Washington everything — the good, the bad and the ugly," said Dan Kurtzer, who was the U.S. ambassador to Israel under President George W. Bush. "If they're not doing so, they are damaging the policy-making process and possibly undermining the president's policies."
Mr. Milstein also questioned several colleagues on whether they were "pro-Israel" or "pro-Hamas," according to four officials, who found the question inappropriate and said it made some people fearful of speaking freely.
