I have been writing this post about the economics of open source, on and off, for 13 years. I wasn't expecting to end up at "Microsoft should send corporations a huge bill" but nothing else we've tried has worked. seldo.com/posts/nobody-pays-for-ope…

Nobody pays for open source. We can force them to. | Seldo.com
Thirty years of voluntary funding schemes haven't paid open source maintainers because asking doesn't scale. The real money already flows — to JFrog, Docker, Sonatype — at the registry layer. The fix: registries charge companies for supply (they already do), then route a slice automatically to the maintainers who make that supply worth having.

Great article! I don't want to think about how many hours I spent fighting derived state in Angular/VueJS/React, and SolidJS has the defaults I wanted all along. What are the little things you love about the framework/library of choice?
Screenshot from the article

Derived State You Can Override
Having writable derived state is easy in Solid. All you do is pass in a function to a primitive like createSignal. This gives you a local override of props.name in this example, but when props.name changes from above it will reset to that value.

import { createSignal } from "solid-js";

function Example(props) {
  const [name, setName] = createSignal(() => props.name);
}

it does seem like pnpm is trying to keep up with the competition, but the competition only exists because it is no longer just a package manager. at this point i'm not sure what the competition is, though

Zod’s bundle size grows with each release. Valibot will always stay below 1 kB for simple schemas and below 2 kB for more complex ones.

8 occurrences of missing data. Downloads line chart for the vue package. The Y axis represents the number of downloads. The X axis represents the date range, from 2025-09-11 to 2026-09-09, with a daily time period. vue starts at 1.4m and ends at 3.1m, showing a mostly flat trend with a slope of 3.3k downloads per time interval. At the bottom, a watermark reads "./npmx a fast, modern browser for the npm registry".

And the problem is specifically people, not tools. The tools by themselves sit there doing nothing, somebody must use them to do harm.

I remember when yarn was born. It was cool and fast and fancy. then it got more complex up to a point that users couldn't keep up. Now pnpm is the star. It is getting more complex requirements to be setup "as intended" and honestly i am worried. sigh... just random thoughts.

the e18e GitHub action noticing that ESLint introduced a duplicate dependency recently 👀 always keep an eye on your deep dependency changes! this one is because a ESLint bumped a dep whose own deps include duplicates (amusingly all of those are maintained by the same person, probably an accident!)

Do you prefer `.mjs` or `.js` for Node libraries? I used to favor `.js`, but `.mjs` seems to improve toolchain performance. Since Node will support CJS for the foreseeable future, we need an easier way to tell ESM and CJS apart. github.com/rolldown/tsd...
