Poems to Write

Companionship welcome (though solitude neat),
indelible closeness, already warm sheets,
some slumbers unbroken, most ruptured ones shared,
chains breaking from pillows come decaf prepared.

Subdued background whisper, this cold winter sky
sporadically punctured (from harsh vixen cry).
Diaphanous clouds, but the stars pushing through;
I want you to know that I’m happy too,

at peace with this pastoral land near the sea,
unflustered, unaltered, consistently me.
If ever I gave you a different idea,
examine it closely, let doubts disappear.

By quarter to midnight, my supper at last,
I'm ‘finishing’ chocolate, then raising a glass
to passing obscurities ever so slight.
Now, if you don’t mind, I've got poems to write.

09 Oct 2026. A photo of one of the blooms on a Bird Of Paradise plant. It’s getting itself ready to “hatch” and unfold its beauty to the world. A softened background includes a wooden deck with chairs, a large brolly, and other miscellaneous plants and bric-a-brac.

“Strelitzia reginae (Crane Flower, Bird Of Paradise) is an iconic tropical plant known for its bold orange and blue flowers that resemble a bird in flight. This striking plant thrives in NZ conditions and adds colour, structure, and a tropical feel to gardens and containers. Ideal for borders, patios, and indoor spaces, it delivers long lasting visual impact.”

About five years back, a friend of mine had broken down a rather large plant in their yard and sold off smaller batches for a reasonable price. I nabbed a bucket o’ paradise, and it seems to be doing well in this part of the yard. Perhaps if I put it into a larger container (it’s in pretty good-sized one as it is), it’d get ever bigger and produce more blooms (this year, there’s three; last year was I think four). Or even planted it as opposed to being in a container. Alas, I’m in a rental and were I to move, this stunner is coming along with me.
