Late to this one by @rishav902.bsky.social et al and want to be very careful because it's the sort of thing where my grew-up-reading-sci-fi-brain is already giddy running light-years ahead of what'd be justified or half a good idea. And yet. Forget the MCU, I want a billion USD in sequels to this.

Evolution of a core ribosomal innovation in octopus
Much of biology focuses on how genetic changes mediate new functions, but less attention is given to adaptations in other steps of the central dogma. Octopuses exhibit complex nervous systems and soph...

Daily briefing: Mutation lets octopuses make proteins with precision
A break in these octopuses’ protein-making machinery boosts their accuracy. Plus, a Nobel-prizewinner has left the United States for China and the effects of microgravity on the brain.

In biology of cells, octopus has another trick up its sleeve
The octopus is a biological oddity. It can use tools, open jars, and its complex nervous system supports as many neurons as a small primate. Now Harvard biologists have discovered a mysterious distinc...

The ribosome is one of life's most ancient molecular fossils- yet octopuses found a way to modify it anyway, showing that studying unusual organisms can lead to unexpected discoveries even within conserved components of the central dogma.

To trace its evolutionary origins, we used a remotely operated vehicle to sample a rare deep-sea octopus from the bottom of the ocean! The break emerged ~100 million years ago, right as shallow-water octopuses diverged from deep-sea relatives and evolved complex nervous systems.

When we engineered the same feature into bacterial ribosomes, they became more accurate too, and reduced protein aggregation- demonstrating that a subtle change to one of life's most ancient machines can fundamentally alter how it works.

What started with a strange break in an RNA gel turned out to reveal a structural innovation deep in the catalytic core of the octopus ribosome. This innovation makes octopus ribosomes exceptionally accurate at building proteins, reducing toxic protein aggregates in their expanded nervous system.

Evolution of a core ribosomal innovation in octopus
Mitra, Han, Scott, et al. discovered a unique structural adaptation in octopus ribosomes that increases the accuracy of protein synthesis and evolved alongside their elaborate nervous systems.
