I can't think of anything that could go wrong if a company known for making cars that spontaneously catch fire is allowed to add high pressure air canisters into the mix.

There are other studies that demonstrate a broad link between quality of govt and satisfaction with democracy, which might suggest it goes both ways - e.g these examples (from a chapter of my book on democracies as political-administrative systems: bristoluniversitypressdigital.com/monochap-oa/...)
The picture is of a paragraph of text. The text reads: "If the reader thinks I am extrapolating too far from just one or two anecdotal examples, there are several larger scale studies from across the world that demonstrate this connection between experience of public administration and democratic attitudes and behaviours. Jamila Michener (2018) has shown how, in the US, experiences of Medicaid conditioned people’s perceptions of the state and whether it cared for them, their feelings about their own political efficacy and their political participation. Welfare states are often the mediator, as Steven Klein (2022) has described it, between the economic rationality of calculation of individual needs and collective political action. In addition, a large cross-country comparison, conducted by Jonas Linde and Stefan Dahlberg (2021), demonstrated that differences in the quality of public administration is a much better predictor of variation in support for democracy across countries than differences in the quality of the electoral regime."

This is a pretty good example of what my ERC project, PoPPiE, is about. Much political theory implicitly teaches us that we, as individuals, should have a single abstract procedural ideology that applies across contexts. But why should we? The world is complex and our response to it should be too.

Interesting study, showing 'synthetic samples' are wildly inaccurate. Though, to be honest, I've always been a bit confused about what a synthetic poll would even be as an epistemological object. They seem like the polling equivalent of NFTs.

Watching the news last night, it felt like Britain was a serious country, where the media can talk sensibly about important and complex policy issues, rather than the usual 'updates from fascist island' of the last couple of years. That has to be good for Labour.

Burnham, unlike Starmer, seems to recognise that the PM has considerable agenda setting power - he doesn't have to simply react to the agenda of the right; he can reshape the terrain.

As expected the right-wing papers hammer Burnham on ending the pensions triple lock: www.bbc.co.uk/news/article.... But, it feels like the first time in a long time (since 2008?) that Labour is setting the terms of the public debate, directing it onto terrain where it is comfortable fighting.

I would add to this that the whole point of an academic publications is that they are supposed to be records of things you have learned through careful scholarship. If they contain non-existent references, they are a misrepresentation of what is assumed to be the process behind the product.

The BBC are consistently referring to Danny Tommo as an "anti-migrant activist". Bizarre how they would invent a new, more legitimising term (anti-migrant activist is not a commonly used term) rather than describe his politics. Even the Telegraph refers to him as a far-right activist.

To spread the word about the release of my book, @brisunipress.bsky.social are offering 50% off the paperback, making it a very reasonable £15. I have 20 discount codes to DM to the first people to share this post. Or read open access at: bristoluniversitypress.co.uk/democracy-pa...
The image shows the cover of the book on the right, with a text description of the book and two testimonials on the left on a white background. Under the description are details of the launch offer in white text on a red background.

The book cover consists of a dark blue square panel in the top half with the title of the book, “Democracy, Participation and Public Administration: A Systems Approach” in white text, and the author name, “Rikki Dean” in white text. The dark blue panel is semi-transparent and overlaid onto the Kandinsky painting “A Delicate Tension”, which fills the entire cover. In the bottom right corner is the Bristol University Press Logo, a capital B in a black circle.

The description of the text reads, “The democratic state is unravelling. Authoritarians exploit its deficits to disguise attacks on democracy as democratic renewal, while Silicon Valley searches for ways to replace public service with private technology. Countering these threats to democratic governance requires thinking administratively about democracy and democratically about administration.

This book develops a novel democratic systems theory that puts public administration at the heart of democracy. The new approach is then applied to the project of democratic innovation, exploring the potential of public participation and digital technologies to democratise the administrative state. It is essential reading for defending democracy in an age of resurgent authoritarianism, providing both theoretical innovation and practical pathways towards a more democratic future.”

Adding the testomonials exceeds the maximum length of the alt text box, but they can be machine read on the book website: https://bristoluniversitypress.co.uk/democracy-participation-and-public-administration.

The details of the launch offer, are “50% off paperback price for first 20 reposters. Or read online / download open access”
