My father a Soil Science professor, working on USAID agricultural projects in Brazil and Indonesia during the 60’s and 70’s would often tell his students, that in a democracy the “peaceful transfer of power” is one of the most important measures of success!

My middle daughter has me “working” my 10 year old grandson on Saturdays. The 9 year old grandson joined us today. Teaching them why we put in soil and water conservation structures. The big red oak had a gully eating under the roots. We back filled with soil and installed this rock drop structure.

I didn't use my health insurance for 27 years, but I paid for it so that if I got cancer or or was severely injured in a farm accident I hopefully wouldn't lose every penny I ever saved paying insane hospital bills. That's what I thought the party of personal responsibility would have expected.

#ResistanceRoots Today in history, 1873: Jay Cooke & Company declares bankruptcy, sparking the Panic of 1873. The catastrophic financial crisis lasted longer than the Great Depression and was in many ways more brutal for ordinary people. We can trace who we are today to its economic devastation. /1

“The Rush from the New York Stock Exchange on September 18, 1873,” by Howard Pyle. There are clear parallels between the Panic of 1873 and today. The crisis wasn’t caused by a lack of wealth. It was caused by irrational exuberance over a revolutionary technology: the railroad. Investors poured billions into laying tracks that led nowhere, assuming the boom would never end. The post-Civil War era also saw the rise of the first mega-corporations, which wielded total control over their employees’ lives and wages. A divide opened between struggling farmers and workers and wealthy Eastern bankers. The farmers felt the “coastal elites” and politicians in Washington were rigging the monetary system against them. In short, the Panic of 1873 was the painful birth of modern industrial capitalism. It proved that an unregulated corporate economy could grow spectacularly, but would also crash brutally.

Worst era for farmers? We often see comparisons to “bad times” in agriculture. Here is my top 3 tough times list: 1. 1929-1933: All of the conditions present. Stock market crash, drought and nobody had any money. My grandfather born in 1903 had a young family when the Great Depression hit. He

The U.S. has entered its 13th COVID wave, with an estimated 1 in 86 Americans currently infectious. Around 567,000 new infections are occurring daily, totalling 3.69 million in a week. PMC estimates a single week at this level could result in 900–1,600 excess deaths. www.wsws.org/en/articles/...

A line graph titled "SARS-CoV-2 New Daily Infections, Wastewater-Derived Estimates (U.S.)" from the Pandemic Mitigation Collaborative (PMC) Model, dated September 7, 2026.
The graph plots estimated daily COVID-19 infections from 2020 through late 2026, with the y-axis ranging from 0 to over 5,000,000. Individual pandemic waves are numbered sequentially from 1 to 13, with a massive peak at wave 4 in early 2022. Wave 13 is shown ticking upwards at the far-right edge.
A central prominent box highlights the date Sep 7, 2026, with a note stating "Preliminary estimates for the past nine days." The graph is attributed to Michael Hoerger, PhD, MSCR, MBA (@michael_hoerger) and references pmc19.com. A text box at the bottom states: "PMC identifies 12 SARS-CoV-2 waves and estimates averages of 5.4 infections per person and 14.5 months between infections."

The American consumer needs to know where their beef comes from. Connect with a rancher and buy direct. Invest in a beef freezer. This is not complicated. Every old cow outside the USA will be your hamburger meat.
