"I think Truss poisoned me"

Richard Lyth @richardlyth.bsky.social · 06/10/2026

As a childless man in his fifties I have no right to comment on this (and certainly won't be reviewing it). But a TARDIS crew including an alien blob and a sentient toaster is way more interesting than the usual set-up we've had for the past 20 years. Looks promising!

Still think ending on Billie was the worst possible decision. I would have cut the regeneration entirely, leaving Ncuti's Doctor open-ended for all the books and audios over the next few years. Next production team can either show the regeneration or just skip it like in 2005.

Still the absolute funniest "trailer remix" ever made -- as well as one of the very first of its kind, debuting in 2005 Every shot is perfectly chosen God I could watch this all day

Really hope James Acaster becomes a Traitor in #CelebrityTraitors - Amol Rajan made a good argument but he would be a bit dull, Acaster in the turret would be pure chaos. (Not that Richard E Grant isn't, but he'll probably get voted off first.)

Real shame Danni left #BakeOff - she was a terrible baker but a big personality. Hopefully she can get her own show about foraging or repairing old computers or whatever.

Caught up on #SNLUK. Jeff Goldblum's ep wasn't great, he just played himself in every sketch, but ep 2 was much better with the Diana sketch, CEX, and this X Factor one. So many hyper-specific references, really brought back memories! youtu.be/K1vazDtVzHo?...

Glad Danni stays in #BakeOff - another week they don't have to go back to Downton Abbey to sweep out the fireplaces.

One of those shows I watched every week for years, even though I knew it was terrible. Only four channels though, what else could you do, go outside?!

Watched the AI Doctor Who episode. The script is decent, and the 'humans' look startlingly realistic, though the aliens are less impressive. It all still has that unsettling uncanny valley feel, and is certainly no substitute for the real thing. But a few years down the line, who knows?

Strange New Worlds just did an episode in the style of a cheesy American soap opera. Next time they should do one in the style of EastEnders, with everyone getting into fights, having affairs and shouting at each other. "GET OUTTA MY BRIDGE!"

Watched The Runaway Bride for the first time in years. The song "Love Don't Roam" is a banger, but it does sound suspiciously similar to "The Snake" by Al Wilson. Probably just a coincidence...

To be fair, human track events would be a lot more entertaining to watch if they all just smashed into a massive mattress at the end.

I'm not usually a fan of true crime, but the "talking gorilla" angle is not something you see every day. Should be good!

Richard Lyth @richardlyth.bsky.social · 20/08/2026

Strange New Worlds puppet episode was fun in parts, worth it for the Pelia puppet alone. But we're halfway through the season and it feels there's been nothing but gimmick episodes. The first two seasons got the balance right, but now it's starting to feel like a parody of itself.

#HouseOfTheDragon ended the season on a high, with a spectacular battle scene. Makes up for some of the less exciting episodes earlier. Only one season to go, which should get back to Targs fighting each other and hopefully wrap things up better than Game Of Thrones did.

This has been a fantastic series of threads delving into the crazy world of comics events, many of which I have yet to read. Deserves to be expanded into a book.

Richard Lyth @richardlyth.bsky.social · 06/08/2026

Strange New Worlds is impressively varied this season. So far there's been a classic Trek time-travel story, a gory horror and now a daft comedy romp. Every episode is wildly different but the characters remain consistent, it's like TV used to be before every show became a serial. Great stuff.

Watched Spider-Man: Brand New Day. It's noticeably darker than the last trilogy, Tom Holland gets plenty of angst to play with, and there are some good action scenes with the Punisher and the Hulk but no real villain. You can skip the post-credits scene though.

Clementine was one of the funniest shows I've seen, it's only a matter of time before Rosalie Minnitt becomes a big star. If I could afford to go to the Fringe this year her new show would be top of my list.

I got this from my local library in the five cut-down collections. It was a great introduction to modern comics, the new status quo made it easy to jump in, and I carried on reading Batman from then up to the Grant Morrison era (and beyond, digitally).
