OTD 1977: Tom Robinson Band – 2-4-6-8 Motorway Their first and biggest hit, with a terrific riff from Danny Kustow’s blistering lead guitar Hugely catchy driving song, arguably more relatable than Tom’s other driving songs, which all steer desperately through haunting post-apocalyptic landscapes…
Tom Robinson Band – 2-4-6-8 Motorway single: orange stencilled logo around raised fist on blackThe Rock ’n’ Roll Years 1978 – Danny Kustow on lead guitar, Tom Robinson on bass and lead vocals, “THE TOM ROBINSON BAND” with (Sing If You’re) Glad To Be Gay, a 1987 TV experience which was both excruciating and life-changing for 15-year-old-me, but that’s another story.
NB I’ve not got my numbers mixed up: this was a documentary about 1978, broadcast in 1987. My wrongness consists merely in using this particular band photo to illustrate a different song in a different year.

This was my first King Arthur on screen, and I fell in love with the legend for ever But it was also the first thing I ever saw Maureen O’Brien in, and coming later to her Doctor Who, I’ve never quite been able to trust Vicki!

OTD 1979: The Legend of King Arthur BBC1 Serious, history-toned version of the myth with the magic toned down (yet still there) Scripted by – yes – the Andrew Davies Andrew Burt is Arthur David Robb Lancelot But most memorable for boy me was Maureen O’Brien playing Morgan le Fay as an evil nun.
The Legend of King Arthur – The Complete Series Simply Media DVD cover
Andrew Burt’s King Arthur in Sutton Hoo-ish armour, around him Merlin, Guinevere, Lancelot
But you can see their selling point: “Andrew Davies' sumptuous adaptation of the timeless saga” (though this adaptation isn’t timeless at all, but tries to give much more of a sense of a real time, several centuries earlier than most)

Top Mrs Gale moment: give Daphne a gun, trusting she *would* shoot her stepmother’s lover. Top Steed moment you wouldn’t get from the Doctor: confront your Weeping Angel by propositioning her. His hand on her bottom is, after all, a form of observation.

Ben Aaronovitch’s debut script exploded onto TV While Ben’s novelisation – his first book, long before conquering the bestseller lists – is, like his The Also People, a contender for best Doctor Who novel of all.
Inset: Doctor Who – Remembrance of the Daleks by Ben Aaronovitch, cover by Alister Pearson – Imperial Dalek to the fore, Special Weapons Dalek and Rebel Dalek to each side, Davros and the Doctor above
Surrounding: The Cover, Cover Version – I restage the original Alister Pearson cover with matching action figures, and, behind it all, an absurdly heavy black marble chopping board my Mum once gave me in a fit of WTF standing in for the headstone

While Doctor Who, as it has from the beginning, fights fascism And fights racists here more explicitly than ever After here linking Daleks, Nazis and racism in the streets, the following story will bring down a Thatcher-ish regime… …But tell me Doctor Who was never political until ‘These days’.
Ace (Sophie Aldred, a bomber-jacketed teenager with attitude) attacks a Dalek (a one-blob armoured tank with worse attitude) with a baseball bat. Dalek: ‘So much for the tolerant Left.’ This may not have been a real line from the story (but does not misrepresent it).

To the extent that the Dune first edition cover looks like a painting of C3PO and R2D2 on Tatooine, and Herbert wrote a bitchy C3PO put-down into his (not very good) fifth Dune novel. Of the official adaptations, I’m afraid the TV series was extremely flat (bar a fabulously theatrical Baron)…
Dune by Frank Herbert – first anniversary edition cover of a desert planet rocky valley with two figures seen from high above. I bet George Lucas had this propped on his camera script.
