Richard Ghost @richarddcoates.bsky.social · 29/09/2026I think being able to run something short when you first buy the game and have that impetus to get going is really important. In terms of players adopting your game, it’s probably even more important for the game creator than the new game owner. (2/2) 020
Richard Ghost @richarddcoates.bsky.social · 29/09/2026Yeah, I think an example adventure in the back of the rulebook is as important as the sidebar rules examples scattered throughout. I still go to them to see how a game should run, but I found them vital as a new GM. There’s plenty I would throw out first to make room before the adventure. (1/2) 120

Richard Ghost @richarddcoates.bsky.social · 26/09/2026These are really good to give a feel for how folks live in each of the locales. It’s great how so many items of gear, backgrounds and other features in Break!! are linked to specific cultures. Is there an index anywhere that links the other way, i.e. from a culture to all the things part of it? 110
Richard Ghost @richarddcoates.bsky.social · 25/09/2026Given that one of the Steve Jacksons teaches stevejacksoning courses at university, that would make the prospectus read super-weird. Can I suggest pondsmiths as an alternative? Pondsmithing sounds like an esoteric craft already. 020

Richard Ghost @richarddcoates.bsky.social · 22/09/2026Joking aside, when I worked at Warlord (2018-9) I was a fan of early WWII tanks. In Bolt Action, the PzIII was the one German-made tank to have a good (for the time) anti-tank weapon, and Warlord didn’t make that version. We pointed it out to John Stallard once, but still don’t think they do it. 010
Richard Ghost @richarddcoates.bsky.social · 22/09/2026If I’m honest, the appeal of this to me is also that my ‘off the cuff’ NPCs tend to be fairly flat, unless I go through the process that reminds me they have a hobby, and an old profession, and quirky bits of gear etc.. But maybe that’s not an issue for most GMs? (2/2) 120
Richard Ghost @richarddcoates.bsky.social · 22/09/2026For D&D maybe, for other games not necessarily. I’m also assuming that only one person per game needs to write the software, and that it’s freely available to use. Then someone else’s over-engineering becomes your convenience. (1/2) 130
Richard Ghost @richarddcoates.bsky.social · 22/09/2026If the objection to detailed NPCs is purely work-based, surely the solution would be to reduce the work with NPC creation software, not to dumb down characters in game? (2/2) 110
Richard Ghost @richarddcoates.bsky.social · 22/09/2026I won’t argue GMs already have enough to do, but with NPCs how much effort is actually creative, and how much mechanical? If it’s the latter then we can get a computer to do it. If I decide I need a fighter, that’s very quick, so long as I don’t have to calculate bonuses and record abilities. (1/2) 110
Richard Ghost @richarddcoates.bsky.social · 22/09/2026Beyond that, I like to have all characters created using the same mechsnics, if not necessarily the same process. I can make an NPC a good shot, for instance, without needing to know how much of that ability is natural talent and how much is experience-based skill - at least in most systems. (3/3) 030
Richard Ghost @richarddcoates.bsky.social · 22/09/2026Basically, do you want every criminal or cop to be a danger to your PCs if they roll well, or are they just there to be cannon fodder or saved by the PCs - and maybe get a lucky shot in on a PC fumble. (2/3) 120
Richard Ghost @richarddcoates.bsky.social · 22/09/2026I don’t think there’s a globally correct answer to this (beyond everyone playing their preferred way, of course), it should depend on the setting. In a classic superhero game, having regular folks created abstractly works, whereas in a more gritty game every person you meet is a challenge (1/3). 130

As someone who’s played very little D&D over 40 years of a life mostly spent roleplaying, I don’t recognise it as being representative at all - especially when in my personal opinion (which I realise many others don’t share) it’s a very poor example of the possibilities. 020

Richard Ghost @richarddcoates.bsky.social · 09/08/2026Interestingly, I’m seeing sudden outrage from small EU-based Etsy store owners today about this - I suspect they just found out because Etsy put a “Don’t sell my physical products to EEA states or NI” option in there stores and emailed them about it. I hope EU-based stores have more impact on this. 000
