The photograph shows a view through a dense forest towards the setting sun. Dark, vertical tree trunks and greenish-yellow foliage are visible. The light of the low sun shines through the trunks. It is bright white in the centre and creates an effect of diffused light in the form of spreading red rays arranged in a cross shape. Blue reflections also appear amongst the red effects.

Pre-Colonial Era: Respect, Roles, and Reverence

Before Western contact, gender diversity was not merely "tolerated"; it was frequently woven into the sacred, spiritual, and functional fabric of the community. Because many Indigenous worldviews did not view gender as a rigid, anatomical binary, individuals who embodied multiple genders or transitioned into another role were often treated with deep respect.
• Spiritual and Ceremonial Leadership: In many cultures, gender-diverse people were seen as possessing a unique dual perspective or a special spirit. Among many Native American nations, they were looked to as healers, matchmakers, namers of children, and keepers of oral history. In Native Hawaiian (Kānaka Maoli) society, māhū were sacred educators and keepers of ancient traditions.
• Integration into Daily Life: In Australia, First Nations people with a female spirit (Sistergirls) or male spirit (Brotherboys) automatically took on the cultural responsibilities, labor, dances, and ceremonies of that gender. For instance, a Sistergirl would go with the women to participate in women's ceremonies.
• Governance and Council: In nations like the Ojibwe, trans women were treated as "persons of consequence," and major decisions were rarely made without their counsel and advice.

You all. My book is out. You can buy it and everything. You can ask your library to carry it. You can put it in tiny libraries by the side of the road. Nobody can stop you. It's available in all the places, but you can get signed copies here: schulerbooks.com/authorarmoxon Go do the thing!
A promotional image for Fighting in the Dark, by AR Moxon.

On the left side, a thumbnail image of the cover of the book, which features the title in blue text in a diagonal, and the authors name in white.

To the right of this, two blurbs, the first of which reads:

"There's a think A.R. Moxon does that I've watched other political writers try and fail at: he holds fury and tenderness in the same sentence. He names the traps fascism sets for us (the false unity, the offer of easy complicity, the fake peace that asks you to pretend people aren't being hurt) more clearly than anyone I've read. This is the book I've been handing out piecemeal for two years, finally in one place."
-Parker Molloy, The Present Age

the second blurb reads:

"In this absolutely brilliant marriage of storytelling and political insight, Andrew isn't afraid to speak truth to power. In fact, he gets up in its face in the middle of the cafeteria and challenges it to a fight."
-Wil Wheaton, author of Dancing Barefoot and Still Just a Geek

A B&W photo of a person standing next to a stack of printed paper as high as the top of their head. This is Margaret Hamilton, at work as a Software Engineer and the leader of a team of extremely specialised programmers who worked for NASA. The photo was taken in 1969, and it shows a physical form if her work since she joined the Apollo project in 1965 (she joined at the age of 29 by my calculation). My interpretation of the expression on her face is a mix of pride and mild amusement. She has glasses, long, straight hair, and neat office attire. Margaret Hamilton has her hands placed gently on the stack of printouts to keep it all balanced upright. The pages appear to be arranged in bundles, ranging from 8-10 centimetres thick, to 20cm thick or more. The resulting stack of printouts is physically impressive for being an unusual feat, and it represents something even more impressive: it's the printed form of the source-code she and the team she led wrote for the NASA Apollo project. Their software ran on the Apollo Guidance Computer that was that on board each Apollo command module and Apollo Lunar Module. The Apollo Guidance Computer onboard the Eagle was an essential flight instrument for Neil Armstrong when he piloted the craft to land on the surface of the moon.

The wealthy parents behind the curtain
A four-panel comic:

Panel 1: A magician on stage dressed in a tuxedo, flourising a top hat, tells the audience "And for my next trick ..."

Panel 2: The magician pulls a document titled "DEED" from his hat, and a woman with two children appears next to him, as he tells the audieince "I'll purchase a home on a single income while my partner stays at home to raise our kids!"

Panel 3: The audience applauses enthusiastically.

Panel 4: One audience member stands and points backstage, where an older man and woman are partiallyl seen holding a sack of money marked "$." The audience member shouts "I can see his parents financially assisting him behind the curtain!" The magician on stage has a guilty look on his face and drops his top hat.
