Teachers—consider adding Lossland to your spring syllabus! An incantatory chapbook-length poem about a queer-family member lost to an abusive relationship, this is the sort of strange, challenging work that gets students writing. Grateful to @mississippireview.bsky.social for featuring one of my alt-pastorals in their new Nature issue—the cover art is so fitting!
Mississippi Review (cover featuring a red leaf in a clear plastic bag against a green background) in a bed of ferns VIPAPASTORAL
Even as eggs are jellied
by pesticides, a new flu

leapfrogs into their flock,
birds catch an updraft and

just float. Once, an orchid
shaped itself to resemble

a female bee so male bees
would visit, and with those

bees extinct, the orchid's
portrait remains. Threads

of mycelium bridge one
oak to another, and when

blight comes, they reach
out. Yes, though our own

whirl lasts but a dizzying
moment, we catch all this

light as we fall like gold
leaves to the forest floor.

Thrilled to have this poem in dialogue with Elizabeth Bishop in the new, 50th anniversary issue of @rhinopoetry.bsky.social!
The Shampoo
after Elizabeth Bishop

Not even the end
of January 2025,
and you're already

on your knees, hair
cut for the first time
since holidays with

your parents. You
always grow it out
for them, the South,

rural gas stations.
But now, it's shorn
again, short as you

like it, flanneled
shoulders flecked
with half-moons.

Time is amenable
once again, so you
bend over the tub's

lip as I wash these
black ringlets shot
through with stars.Cover of RHINO poetry journal. A photo of black driftwood on tan sand, enhanced with a white brush stroke

Grateful to have a poem from LOSSLAND @blacklawrence.bsky.social in the new, absolutely stacked issue of @haydensferryreview.bsky.social—the cover art matches it perfectly!
Cover of HFR—art is a painting of face reflected in water, obscured by the current. Text of poem:

[REFLECTED IN THIS]

Reflected in this
stream, your face

is shattered and
then remade, but

the current rushes
on. Yes, minnows

hover, crayfish lift
claws below, but

such shimmering
light tires the eyes.

Memories must be
themselves only—

a TB-vaccine scar
dances on your

shoulder as you
slather oysters in

chipotle butter,
and I open wine,

the years rolling
over us like fog.

New poem in @chicagoqreview.bsky.social
THE EGRETS

In traffic on the way
back to the hospital,
the storm breaks over
the Bay to our right,

and between slashes
of rain, their white V
rises from marshland,
keeps pace, fighting

wind until it vanishes
over the water. Later,
rain streaks intensive
care room windows

and we imagine long
legs lowered into mud
to flush out minnows,
a beak’s sudden snap.

There’s no equation.
Nothing is given, so
nothing can be taken
away: Tangle of tubes.

Mass of roots. A bud
opens. Someone dies.
Great birds take wing.Cover of Chicago Quarterly Review—sepia toned abstract images

Text of poem:

It's Perseids season
again, when a great

darkness pours out
stars; though they're

imperceptible here in
the city, we counted

dozens once, craning
necks beside an old

logging road, the first
break we'd found in

the redwoods. Earlier,
we ripped cardboard

open to free a yellow
cloud of wasps, so we

wonder, can they see
all this light falling?

Do they even know
they've left the box?
