"We definitely weren’t designed to cope with all this--our bodies, our nervous systems, our brains. Among all the other dangers these developments represent, they’re simply wearing us out. A lot of us would like politicians to offer, alongside promises of affordability, even a glimpse of serenity."

A useful task I would like an AI to perform would be to calculate how many minutes in a film certain objects appear on screen. ChatPro offered to search the web to tell me how I could make this calculation myself but TBH, I could have done that on my own.

Yes, this is what the Washington Post has come to? Tomorrow: "Why not annihilate Iran? I answered your questions."

Of course Trump's "threat" to annihilate Iran is little more than narcissistic bluster. But if he is in fact insane enough to think he could do so, his only military options would have to be nuclear.

In my 1994 essay "What is an Electronic Author? Theory and the Technological Fallacy," much of which applies to AI authorship today, I described Bruno Latour's "diffusion model" to criticize the elision of economic, institutional, and material agency in enthusiastic accounts of electronic writing.

In 1994 I published an essay "What Is an Electronic Author?" to take up claims the hypertext and other digital technologies were the electronic manifestations of post-structuralist theory's decentering of meaning, writing, and authorship. The essay's concluding sentences speak to our moment.

The Carolina Panthers defense, which let up 59 points to the Chicago Bears last week, held the Atlanta Falcons to 3 points today. The Bears offense, after scoring 59 points against the Panthers last week, scored 3 points against the Minnesota Vikings today.

I have been arguing this since the beginning of his first term in office. Indeed I argued in "Donald Trump's Evil Mediation" that he won the GOP nomination and the presidency in 2016 by taking up all of the media real estate and crowding out his competitors. muse.jhu.edu/article/650865

The most frightening lines in today's op-ed by @tressiemcphd.bsky.social are the final ones: "The threat is already here. Panic won’t fix it. Politics will." If we're dependent on politics to avert the threat of AI and its overlords, we are, to put it plainly, fucked.

Forgive my naivete and lack of imagination, but doesn't AI need energy and access to data in order to operate? Can't we just turn off the spigot if it is truly such a threat to humanity?

Twenty-five years after 9/11, we still live under the media regime of premediation, where print, televisual, and networked news media are preoccupied with generating the immediacy of potential, mostly threatening, futures more than the remediation of past events.

25 years after 9/11, the NYT premediates AI apocalypse: "It could launch a bioweapon attack, or a global drone war. It could set off a nuclear bomb. Or it could destroy human society more gradually, by hoarding all the world’s economic resources and depriving us of food, housing or medicine."

"All the while he loved the People just as much as he feared and detested Persons, and he planned to do something historic. Certainly! He would give each family that five thousand dollars a year just as soon now as he could arrange it". [Sinclair Lewis - It Can't Happen Here]
Screenshot from IT CAN'T HAPPEN HERE by Sinclair Lewis, a novel set in a fictionalized version of the 1930s United States, it follows an American politician, Berzelius "Buzz" Windrip, who quickly rises to power to become the country's first outright dictator (in allusion to Adolf Hitler's rise to power in Nazi Germany)]

P411
the duties of despotism along with his shoes and his fine new coat. He no longer went out racketing. His cabinet begged him not to clown in barrooms and lodge entertain-ments; it was not dignified, and it was dangerous to be too near to strangers.

So he played poker with his bodyguard, late at night, and at such times drank too much, and he cursed them and glared with bulging eyes whenever he lost, which, for all the good-will of his guards about letting him win, had to be often, because he pinched their salaries badly and locked up the spoons. He had become as unbouncing and unbuzz-ing a Buzz as might be, and he did not know it.

All the while he loved the People just as much as he feared and detested Persons, and he planned to do some-thing historic. Certainly! He would give each family that five thousand dollars a year just as soon now as he could arrange it.
