a very unfinished monochromatic freehand digital painting of Adam Driver after 7 hours of work; his hair is essentially mostly done, with the exception of those curls at the nape of his neck, I might be done with his ear, and I've made an effort to smooth out a fair portion of his left temple, cheek, jaw, and some of his neck. The rest of him remains more of a strong suggestion than anything else, and he still doesn't have eyes.

Ben’s left eye was throbbing. Every inch of his body was in pain, to be honest. But his fucking eye…
They’d really messed him up the last time. He couldn’t even remember who they’d sent into his cell last. Some big, burly brute with something to prove, felt like. He’d covered Ben’s body in bruises, but Ben hadn’t said a word. He never would.
They’d have to kill him.
The Empire had captured the wrong rebel if they wanted information so badly. In a way, it was a good sign they were so desperate to get Ben to talk that they’d beat him within an inch of his life every day just to heal him enough to carry on each night. They were floundering. They had no clue what the Resistance had planned and it was going to stay that way.
He hoped someone would infiltrate the Empire’s base to rescue him. Surely his mother was worried. But, even in the likely event that they didn’t conduct such a risky mission, Ben would continue to do the one thing he swore to. He’d guard their secrets with his life.
The lock in his cell door clicked as a key card swiped through it. When it opened, it flooded the dark, tiny room with bright fluorescent light. Ben shut his eyes tight against the burning brightness and huddled closer to the corner of the room.
Apparently, it was time for his daily beating. Ben laughed, though the sound was hoarse and weak.
“When are you idiots finally going to figure it out? You can skin me alive and I still won’t talk. Unless they’ve sent you here to finally kill me, you’re wasting your time.”
There was a feminine sigh. “I know. That’s what I’ve been telling them, but they wouldn’t listen to me. Until today.”
Ben’s entire body went rigid, but he still didn’t dare open his eyes. He knew that voice. He knew it intimately. He knew how it could moan his name and arouse him in an instant. That voice could make him do anything. But not anymore.

However, fear still permeated his bloodstream, making him feel icy cold.
“Hello, Ben,” that soft, pretty voice crooned. “Won’t you look at me?”
He opened his eyes. Fuck. He opened his eyes and he fucking looked.
Rey. Gorgeous, smiling, ball of sunshine Rey. Traitorous, beautiful liar. Conniver. Deceitful little brat. Fucking heartbreaker.
She was smiling at him now, like she hadn’t tricked him for months. Smiling as though she hadn’t pretended to be a simple, innocent civilian just trying to make a living. Like she hadn’t made him think he was falling in love with her, and her with him. All those nights he’d snuck away from base to the nearby town just to see her—to listen to her talk about her day (lies) and fall asleep next to her, naked in her bed (a trap).
Rage bubbled up inside of him. If he wasn’t chained to the floor and in pain, he’d launch himself at her. He’d destroy her.
Rey hissed as he glared at her through his good eye. “Vicrul did a real number on you, huh? Sorry about that. I told him to go easy.”
No you fucking didn’t, he wanted to snap.
When he didn’t play along, she changed tactics. She flicked on the light, which hummed to life, and closed the door. “You know why I’m here,” she said.
No response.
“The Empire is growing frustrated. They want to destroy you, or use you as a bargaining chip. But I convinced them to spare you because I know you’ll submit to me. You’ve done it before.”
“You’re fucking crazy,” Ben grumbled through dry, cracked lips. “I’m not telling you shit.”
“Ah. Because you already told me enough, is that it?”
He glared at her. She was the reason he was stuck here in the first place, now she wanted to play hero? Absolutely fucking ludicrous.

She stood and walked over to his corner, kneeling down. She tried to take his face in her hand but he whipped his head away from her despite how the sudden movement made him see stars.
“Don’t fucking touch me,” he spat.
She put her hands up. Ben tried to squint with his good eye. Were those…tears? Oh, Maker.
“I’m sorry,” she whimpered. “It wasn’t supposed to feel like this, I—It was never meant to go this way. I didn’t mean for this to get so real.”
“What are you talking about?”
“You. Me. What we’ve done together. It was just supposed to be a ruse. The way it got physical was a bonus—much-needed stress relief for the both of us. But then feelings got involved and…I’m sorry.”
Ben shook his head. “No, you’re not. You wanted me to hurt. You enjoy this—seeing me like this.”
“I promise you, I don’t.”
“Enough. Enough lies, Rey. Aren’t you fucking tired of lying? Maker. Just kill me and be done with it. You’ve done the most damage to me; it only tracks that you’d be the one to end it.”
“I’m not lying. Look at the camera in the corner.”
Ben did. Its red light, which had blinked unceasingly this entire time, was dark. It wasn’t recording.
“I’ve been in contact with your mother. I’m going to help the Resistance get you out.”
Ben laughed even though it hurt. “What a joke. I’m right where you wanted me. Why let me go? You think it’ll allow me to forgive you?”
“Maybe. Maybe I just want you to know I regret it.”
He stared at her hard as a different kind of pain swelled in his chest—one that felt more devastating than all the other blows he’d taken. This one felt truly life-threatening. She’d hurt him with her lies and he was finally angry enough to do the same to her.
“Yeah? So do I. All of it.”

The ravens stay perched on their jagged, barren boughs and watch the man in the dark cloak walk purposefully down the dirt street towards the teacher’s house. He has dark eyes set in a pale, handsome face and when he knocks on the door, he stands half a head taller than the lintel.

The ravens have seen this spectre before, and their ancestors saw it before them. He comes and goes as he pleases, but every autumn he loses his head and goes mad. The ravens know how he chases and how he torments. They know how he kills.

The ravens are the only ones who know. They are the keepers of secrets in this morose town called Sleepy Hollow. They will never tell.

The pretty teacher opens her door. Her wariness is immediately evident, but when her eyes lock with the man’s, it fades to surprise. A smile grows upon her rosy lips and her freckled cheeks flare with colour. The man picks up her hand and presses his lips to her knuckles with a reverent tenderness that even shocks the ravens.

Something feels different this time.

The man disappears into the house, ducking his head to enter. That head of his—that mad, cursed head—is firmly attached to his neck. His fingers do not twitch with the urge to remove it, even though the leaves are brown and dying, many already rotting on the ground.

The ravens croak and shake their wings, like it might rid them of the strange, foreboding feeling. They’d watched this spirit for decades, but they’d never experienced this version of the story before.

Things do not change in Sleepy Hollow. They always stay the same. And yet, the town’s ghosts have become restless. The veil grows thin and the tension ruffles their feathers. The message is clear.

If the Horseman’s head doesn’t roll, another’s will.

The only constants here are mystery and murder. The ravens are the only ones who know.

“Who’s that guy with the dark hair and broody aura?” Rose asked, gesturing over Rey’s shoulder.
Rey tensed and turned her head to look, only to find a familiar set of whiskey-toned eyes staring at her back. She’d seen that man in the restaurant before, only a couple of times. He was always seated with a long table of men and women in formal attire, suitcases propped against chair legs, chatting with a bunch of legal jargon thrown in. Today, he sat alone. He always wore designer shoes and today he had a designer jacket to match. Rey rolled her eyes and turned back to her friend and coworker.
“Don’t know,” she answered. Probably just another rich guy who thinks he’s entitled to whatever he sees, including the waitresses.
“Well, he keeps staring at you.”
“Don’t care.”
Rose scoffed. “How can you not care? Look at him. He’s all tall, dark and handsome and stuff. Has he come onto you before?”
“No.”
“Well, then—”
“I don’t want to talk about this right now.”
“That’s fine. We’ll talk about it later. He’s seated in your section, or did you not notice because you don’t care?”
Rey’s eyes flashed with distress. “Shit.”
Rose winked at her and started to walk away with a tray of drinks balanced on her palm. “Later!”
Rey took a deep breath—the deepest breath—and walked over to the stranger’s table.
“Good evening, sir,” she said brightly with a big fake smile to match. “Can I get you started with something to drink?”
He didn’t answer right away. His eyes flicked over her and her all-black attire before finally coming to rest upon her face. Her heart started to race and she fought the urge to fidget.

“Just water for now, thanks,” he said. His voice was deep and masculine, just like she assumed it would be.
His order surprised her, though. He seemed like a highball kind of guy.
“Really?” she blurted out. He raised his eyebrows at her and embarrassment flushed her system. “I—sorry. Sorry. I’ll get your water right away.”
“Wait.”
Rey flinched and slowly turned back around.
“What would you recommend instead of water?”
She blinked. “Oh, um…we have really good scotch, if you’re into it. It’s smoky, but not in a way that makes your stomach turn.”
What an elegant way to describe a finely-aged scotch, Rey. Well done. She tried not to grimace.
He chuckled. “I’ll try it. Thanks.”
And so it went. Every time she brought him what he’d asked for, he’d smile at her in a way that made her stomach flop. She couldn’t explain it. When she’d handed him the bill and he’d passed her his credit card (all black, by the way) and their fingers briefly touched, she almost gasped at the spark of heat that cut through her.
When she returned to the table with his card and receipt, he handed her a crisp fifty dollar bill and a matte black business card. She lifted her eyebrows as she read it. He’s a fucking prosecutor?!

“Um, thank you for the tip,” she said with a trembling smile. “I don’t think I need legal advice, though…”
He chuckled. “It’s not for that. I mean, it could be, if you needed, but tonight it’s just to give you my number. You wanna call me when you’re done here?”
Her spine straightened and her thoughts bottomed out. She’d been inappropriately touched, cat-called, objectified…but she’d never been approached at work with a casual question and a business card before.
“Are you—why?”
Amusement sparkled in his eyes. “I’d like to take you out sometime. If you let me.”
“I—” She’d been about to say no. This was unprofessional of both of them and she didn’t know him and there were so many ways this could go so very wrong, and—
Oh, but he was hot. And he tipped well. And he’d been nothing but polite. And he was fucking hot.
Fuck it. She looked at the clock.
“Actually, I get off shift in twenty minutes, if you don’t mind waiting…?”
“Of course not. I’ve got a quick errand to run a couple blocks over from here, then I’ll be back. I drive the—”
“The Aston Martin Vanquish? Yeah, I noticed.”
He had the manners to look contrite, at least.

When she woke the next morning, pleasantly aching, there was a designer jacket lying crumpled on her bedroom floor.
