It was dreamless, this curse-caused slumber that landed Ophelia in the Boone County Hospital. Nothing more she could remember after she finally awoke than a misty sort of darkness.

She had been pruning the chaos of a garden between her trailer and the neighbouring one, where Winnie Weyward used to live in before she moved to the seniors’ village with her two sisters. It had to have sat untended for at least a year, a garden left to four seasons of its own devices.

Ophelia had moved to Boone County to be closer to her brother and rented a little trailer in the Shady Acres Mobile Home Park, but she was encountering a few social bumps and bruises as she adjusted to life there. One particular bump that drove her to seek solace in the garden that day came in the form of Laertes’ roommate and local bartender, Clyde Logan—she didn’t know how she managed such a bad first impression, but his favourite pastimes seemed to be either avoiding her or scowling at her if the first option wasn’t possible.

She decided that putting her green thumb to good use tending to the garden before winter might be a positive way to deal with the stress.

Unfortunately, no one warned her that Ms. Winnie had more than a few wards and curses active in her garden, protective and paranoid as she was about folks stealing her potion supplies. And with her memory not being what it once was, Ms. Winnie hadn’t thought to deactivate them when she left.

One minute Ophelia was pruning back some mountain mint in the sunshine, and the next—she was sprawled on the ground in a peaceful if unnatural sleep.

Luckily one of the other residents passed by before night fell and noticed the strange sight of a woman’s passed out in her garden. They called for an ambulance, and Ophelia was brought to the hospital.

“Who's the man of your dreams, Rey?” Rose asks one day during a lull at the coffee shop. The question makes Rey's blood go cold.

“My dreams? Same as everyone's I guess.”

She didn't have the heart to say that the man in Rey's dreams was a nightmare. Sometimes he was a monster, a demon, a man with a bloody ax chasing her through school corridors.

“Tall, dark and handsome?”

Rey gives a nervous laugh. “Sure.”

“I mean, you don't have to be interested in men,” Rose says after a beat of awkward silence.

But Rey is saved by the bell, that is until she looks up to see her nightmare man enter.

“Why don’t you be a good little omega and get me a slice of pie?”
The question was followed by the tell-tale sound of an ass being smacked. Hard.
Apparently, someone—Fuck it, Hux, it was always Hux--wanted to lose his stupid alpha balls tonight. Right on time for their annual Friendsgiving dinner. Typical.
Rey glanced up from the celery she was chopping, and she rolled her eyes at Ben. His eyes crinkled at the corners as he grinned and held up a hand.
As his lips twitched with a withheld laugh, he counted off with his fingers, and they waited for the inevitable explosion.
One.
Two.
Three.
Beyond the kitchen doors, the sound of a palm striking something fleshy–a face, probably–cracked like a whip.
“Ow! Goddammit, Rosie!” Hux yelped. “I was playing!”
“Get your own fucking pie. Touch me again, and you’re gonna pull back a bloody stump.”
Rose’s angry stomps grew louder, then the kitchen door swung open as she sailed inside in a cloud of righteous fury, dark eyes blazing.

“Why did you invite him?” she demanded, pointing a finger at Ben. “I hate him.”
“You don’t hate him. You’ve been fucking him on and off since freshman year.” Ben shrugged with a decided lack of commitment to the complaint and returned to his work dicing onions by the lit candle. A little trick his Nana Padme had taught him years ago, to keep from crying.
“Well, right now, we’re off. Fucking hell.” Rose sidled up to Rey, bumping her hip against her friend’s. “You’re lucky you don’t have to deal with demi stuff. You never have to wonder if it’s a real connection or someone’s hormones having a damn surge. And, you don’t have to worry about dealing with knot-head alphas who don’t have any manners.” With a cheeky grin, she snatched up a piece of celery and popped it in her mouth. “No offense.”
“None taken. Beta life is best life,” Rey said with a brief smile, training her eyes on the remaining green stalks in front of her. She’d been chopping for hours–celery, carrots, potatoes, mushrooms, and everything else Ben threw at her as his ‘favorite sous chef.’ Her culinary skills weren’t that fabulous, but she and Ben had always been kitchen compatible. Namely, neither talked too much, which really meant something in a world where people strived to be loud, louder, and loudest. “Or is that ‘no offense’ for Ben?”

“Nope. I always mean offense to alphas.” Rose winked at Ben and rounded the small island to his side to assess the onion carnage. “Not bad. For an alpha.”
“Are you going to lend a hand, or are you just taking a break from your admirer?” Ben asked, using his knife to scrape the diced onions from the scarred wooden cutting board into a pan. He was more than used to Rose’s opinions on alpha kind, even if she did have those hormonal lapses of judgement with Hux.
“Do you have any hors d'oeuvres?” Rose asked, leaning onto the island and propping her chin on her hand. “Everyone’s feeling nibbly out there, and we’re gonna start watching the parade. Niima, you ever going to take a break?”
Rey lifted her head from her workmanlike chopping and gave a brief shake. “I’m fine. You go on. What’s the parade bet this year? Will Snoopy self-destruct? Or will Shrek implode and take out a high school marching band?”
Ben snorted, and Rose hauled herself off the island.
“You’ve got a dark soul, babe. Now where’s the crudité platter?”

I’m sorry Kind of Anyway: angst and heartbreak ahead

Rey studied the candle: squat, uneven, visible dust on the sides. Beeswax, probably, though she couldn't smell it through the dust and age. With a sigh she trimmed the wick, dug for one of the few, precious matches that remained.
A hiss, a spark, a kiss of transferred flame, and the glow...
She closed her eyes and waited, gasped at the weight of a hand on her shoulder, shivers of ice down her spine.
"You have to stop this, Sweetheart.
You have to let me go."
She bit her lip, shook her head: a silent, broken, pleading no.

"It's not fair. It can't be finished when it never even started"
"This is how it has to be."
She stared at the golden glow, the shadow and flame dancing against the wall.
The silhouette of two people.
He never let go, hand on her shoulder, and she rested her fingers atop his, until the joints and muscles ached and cramped.

"You'll come back again?"
"Every time you call, Sweetheart, whether I should or not."
The flame guttered, hissed, the wick drowned in a pool of melted wax.
It would be restored by morning, just as every day before, one precious hour of wick remaining.
She'd buy more matches tomorrow.

He smiles, and though it’s tinged with sadness, he doesn’t allow her to feel that part. He runs his fingers through her hair and leans his forehead against hers.

“It is impossible not to,” he says. “I, for one, was doomed from the start.”

“Ben…”

He does love it when she says his name like that. When she sighs it, so soft and lovely, like it’s her last breath and she has happily saved it for him and him alone.

He kisses her gently, because he wants nothing more and because he doesn’t need to hear her say she loves him too. Not yet. Maybe not ever, if he’s smart and can learn to stay away. Ensuring that she knows how he feels about her was the most crucial thing, anyway.

If he is to become a monster tomorrow, let her know that he loved her before he turned into her nightmare.
