growing pawpaw from seed; each photo has alt text explaining the step. #gardensky #growingfruit #seedlings 🌱
a photo of several pawpaw seeds in damp soil in a square pot. several are germinating, with green visible above the soil. little elbows of stem are pushing the seeds up out of the dirt.

pawpaw seeds cannot be allowed to dry out at all or they will not germinate. after eating a really good pawpaw, wash the seeds and put them in damp paper towel in a sealed container or baggie in the fridge. keep them there until you plant them.

when you plant, use soil that will hold water and also a dome to retain humidity. they do not need or like full sun, but partial sun and shade to get started. warmth will make them pop up faster.

pawpaw put out a tap root that can be VERY long before the seed appears at the soil line. this tap root is delicate and if you break it, you may kill the plant. use the tallest container you've got to pot them up into- width is less important than depth for these trees.

this tap root reached the bottom of a 5" tall pot just as the top was visible germinated at the soil surface.this is a 6"tall tree pot with a two month old seedling in it. it will be planted out in the fall, after it drops its leaves. use light soil when starting pawpaw so it is easier to take them from their pots to plant in the ground- you don't want to damage the tap root when moving it.here you can see a tap root beginning to work its way through and out of the bottom of a square starting pot. at this point the seed is on top of the soil, apparently lifeless- but it's putting this root down before it starts to make a leaf or elbow. this needs to be put into a tall pot now, even though the top of the plant doesn't look like it's growing.

Not surprisingly, there are lots of conspiracy theories (Antifa! anti-data center! pro-data center?) online about how the Spokane fires started and spread. But there's a sadly simple equation: drought + ignition + high wind + extreme dryness = destruction www.spokesman.com/stories/2026...
