No you are not - everyone is using the same tools, the language included looks same.. Also easier said than done, claim the small wins you are shy of showing. It distinguishes you from your friends who are writing about the same clubs that everyone is part of… (n/n)

Lastly - don’t over inflate your resumes. it’s very easy for HMs to make out chatGPT language. We want to learn about you, your passion, and your background. Raw resumes/profiles are nicer read, than overpolished/LLM generated resume content. And if you think you are the only one using ChatGPT (6/n)

It might be good to explore upcoming areas like physics, chemistry, energy systems, that has a lot of data, and not an established AI/ML space. Maybe even take time to get a minor/build deep expertise (5/n)

The tech industry is saturated beyond what is being perceived. 1000s of applications for intern/university hire positions are received in ~72h of jobs being posted ☠️ For fresh graduates I’d say, calibrate n decide: whether this is worth the fight? Or do you want to target a more niche field (4/n)

Layoffs are going to continue - even though you are not hearing about, almost all my friends from big tech have confirmed that it is happening silently. There is an increased capital cost requirement to procure more compute and the market with inflation and wars makes goods expensive (3/n)

It’s very difficult to hire fresh graduates, even PhDs. While there is several factors at play & 1 contributor is the difference in pace of AI/ML research in academia vs. industry. The industry is moving fast, making it preferable to hire experienced ICs, in the limited hiring that’s happening. 2/n

Bayesian Neural Networks Bayesian neural networks address overfitting by modeling uncertainty in the weights. Plus they can be trained using standard neural net tools using an algorithm called stochastic variational inference, which we cover at the end of this tutorial.

Google released a new LLM today - gemini-exp-1121, hot on the heels of last week's gemini-exp-1114 It's currently at the top of the Chatbot Arena. I've updated my llm-gemini plugin to support it and used that to run my pelican on a bicycle SVG benchmark My notes: simonwillison.net/2024/Nov/22/...
llm -m gemini-exp-1121 'Generate an SVG of a pelican riding a bicycle'

Since Gemini is a multi-modal vision model, I had it describe the image it had created back to me (by feeding it a PNG render):

llm -m gemini-exp-1121 describe -a pelican.png

And got this description, which is pretty great:

The image shows a simple, stylized drawing of an insect, possibly a bee or an ant, on a vehicle. The insect is composed of a large yellow circle for the body and a smaller yellow circle for the head. It has a black dot for an eye, a small orange oval for a beak or mouth, and thin black lines for antennae and legs. The insect is positioned on top of a simple black and white vehicle with two black wheels. The drawing is abstract and geometric, using basic shapes and a limited color palette of black, white, yellow, and orange.
