I know this fight intimately, and I am fighting in Congress to make sure cancer research and care is funded and accessible.

It has been 12 years since I lost my husband Kevin to a rare form of cancer called T-cell prolymphocytic leukemia. Before he passed, Kevin participated in a clinical trial that gave him two more years of life - invaluable time for our young family.

September is Blood Cancer Awareness Month. I sat down to speak with Dr. Karen Rabin, a pediatric hematologist-oncologist, researcher, and Director of @ucsfchildrens.bsky.social Leukemia Program to talk about the importance of blood cancer awareness, research, and the work she does everyday.

Everyone deserves the right to make their own decisions on when & how to become a parent - regardless of their background or how much they earn. Congress must repeal the Hyde Amendment to ensure that all women—regardless of socioeconomic status, race, or ethnicity—can access the care they deserve.

Today marks the 50th anniversary of the Hyde Amendment, one of the most harmful abortion restrictions ever enacted. The Hyde Amendment prohibits coverage of abortion care for individuals enrolled in the federal Medicaid program, and disproportionately targets low-income people who rely on Medicaid.

This legislation establishes a path forward to address ongoing injustices carried out by the U.S. government and demand the accountability our communities deserve.

Last week, @repmarkdesaulnier.bsky.social & I teamed up to introduce the "Confronting and Correcting Historical Injustices Act" to establish a Commission for Review & Correction of Historical Injustices to identify, investigate, and remedy historical injustice and discrimination by federal agencies.

For too long, Black and brown communities have been subjected to discriminatory practices at the hands of our own government without proper accountability or acknowledgement. That legacy of racial inequality continues today as the Admin. kills American citizens & terrorizes immigrant communities.

As Members of Congress, we’re using every tool available to us to dismantle abusive enforcement practices and hold the agencies that have enabled these practices accountable for the violence they've unleashed on American streets. Accountability is the floor, these families deserve justice.

Hearing the lived experiences of people whose family members and neighbors were murdered by ICE - and the dehumanization, coverups, and lies that their own government pushed in the aftermath, was absolutely heartbreaking.

Proud to partner with fellow Bay Area member @replsimon.bsky.social to introduce a bill, inspired by the case of the Port Chicago 50, to ensure marginalized communities who were harmed by the federal government have a path to rectify these injustices and demand accountability.

To close out Congressional Black Caucus week, I hosted a breakfast for constituents in town. We came together to remember that our history wasn’t inherited easily. It was carved in sacrifice, in imagination, in refusal. We belong to a lineage of Dellums & Lee, of Black Panthers, of freedom fighters.

Ms. Carlson spoke of the day she bore witness to the murder of Alex Pretti in Minneapolis, Minnesota at the hands of federal agents. She put forth the truth, and she is the example of what it looks like to show, share, and speak up when injustice happens.

This week, I joined my House and Senate Democratic colleagues to hear the testimony of people close to individuals who have been murdered by ICE agents and continue to demand accountability.

As a member of Congress with an acute visual impairment, this work is personal to me, and I am so proud to have brilliant members of my team working with advocates, doctors, and researchers to advance healthcare and disability justice!

My health policy staffer, Addy, recently joined vision advocates to discuss the importance of vision care, our office's fight for disability justice in Congress, and innovative policies we can partner on to advance the fight for accessible care and resources for people with visual impairments.

Let me be clear: this is only a first step. I look forward to working with my colleagues on comprehensive policies that protect ratepayers, safeguard our environment and public health, and ensure large companies are held responsible for the costs their operations create.

Congresswoman Lateefah Simon @replsimon.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
Last week, I voted for the Ratepayer Protection Act, an initial framework to help ensure that costs associated with operating large data centers are not absorbed by our families, communities, and small businesses. East Bay families shouldn't endure the burden of those costs.

Congresswoman Lateefah Simon @replsimon.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
Congress needs a comprehensive federal framework to address their impacts on our communities, including the rising utility costs families may be forced to absorb.
151
Congresswoman Lateefah Simon @replsimon.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
Like many people in our district and across the country, I am deeply concerned about the rapid proliferation of data centers and the enormous energy demands they require.

I am so proud of the home care workers who have taken the historic first step to organize and fight for living wages, dignity, and strong Medicaid home care for all. This vote signals a shift in how care is recognized and supported in our country.

504 loans are vital for businesses & entrepreneurs financing major assets, such as property & equipment, & are a lifeline especially as the cost of doing business climbs higher. As a member of the Small Business Committee, I will never stop fighting for resources & protections for small businesses.

Congresswoman Lateefah Simon @replsimon.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
This week, I introduced my SEVENTH bill to help support small businesses. The "504 Program Level Flexibility Act," would give the SBA flexibility to raise the level of financing available in the 504 loan program during times of high demand.

I will continue standing with our communities and fighting to protect California’s ability to pursue cleaner air and a healthier future.
173
Congresswoman Lateefah Simon @replsimon.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
I joined my CA Democratic delegation colleagues in calling for these protections to remain in place. Communities like Oakland, which already bear an outsized burden of pollution from ports & freight movement, deserve cleaner air, not another attempt to roll back California’s environmental standards.
192
Congresswoman Lateefah Simon @replsimon.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
California has long led the nation in protecting the health of our communities & cleaning up pollution from our ports and waterways. H.J.Res. 210 and H.J.Res. 213 would undermine California’s authority to require cleaner harbor craft, including ferries, tugboats, & workboats operating in our waters.

The resolution passed with bipartisan support 220-204 - it's clear we need a foreign policy that prioritizes accountability, diplomacy, and de-escalation rather than create new pathways to conflict.

I voted YES on H.Con.Res. 86, the Iran War Powers Resolution to end President Trump's illegal war in Iran and reassert that Congress has the sole power to declare war.

However, this legislation does more harm than good by implementing the largest expansion of presidential tariff authorities in history to a President who cannot be trusted with this power.
171
Congresswoman Lateefah Simon @replsimon.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
President Trump already has significant authority to impose meaningful sanctions on Russia. The people of Ukraine have endured extraordinary loss and suffering as a result of Russia’s brutal war, and there must be accountability for that aggression.
171
Congresswoman Lateefah Simon @replsimon.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
Today, I am voting NO on the Senate amendment to H.R. 5334, the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act, because the bill grants unnecessary sweeping new tariff authorities to the Executive Branch that could result in escalation.

This new design will expand the size of the Port’s existing turning basins, which will allow the Port of Oakland to accommodate larger and more efficient modern cargo ships. Projects like these keep our port competitive on the global scale AND boost economic activity and jobs in Oakland - let's go!
