All the gradient yarn has been spun up. I knit up a swatch and have decided I’m going to try and make a sleeveless vest - top down, with steeked armholes so that I can knit the whole thing in the round and keep the gradient going through the entire garment.

A quick picture of a yarn swatch I’m holding on my leg. The yarn is undyed sheep wool twisted together with a wool and cotton gradient yarn that is mainly yellow with a little orange blended in.

A swatch should be 15x15 cm, and it should be washed and blocked. This is very much not that. This is the absolute bare minimum “eh, that’ll do” kind of swatch, about 14 centimetres wide and not even 5 centimetres high. We’ll see if I’ll come to regret guesstimating an accurate gauge from this manifestation of my laziness.

Had to share this thrift find! Vintage hand knit cardigan! The brown looks hand dyed! Pure wool! Amazing invisible pockets! 18 euros!!

Hi it’s me, except I’ve cut the upper half of my face out of the frame in a half hearted attempt at internet anonymity. I’m wearing a most excellent cardigan that looks very soft. It’s knit from a kind of warm oatmeal brown, with near-black dots all over. On either side of the button band it’s got striking horizontal stripes. It’s got cute hand turned wooden buttons. You can’t see the pockets it has because the person who made this cardigan knew what they were doing and used an afterthought pocket technique that produces a pocket that looks identical to the actual cardigan.
I’m also wearing pants (thank god), a red belt, and a New California Republic t shirt. I am low key trying to show off this t shirt because I bought it at comic con and got a discount because of my landsknecht fallout cosplay.

This is actually a pretty stupid closeup and you’re not missing much. I’m trying to show the pocket, and I guess if you’re a knitter you’ll be like “oh, cool!” and otherwise this is just a picture of lovely fluffy knitted stitches (with some variety in the color of the brown yarn that makes me think it may be hand dyed yarn) to you. Which I’m not judging. Thanks for reading!

Using this long gradient yarn to practice spinning. I’m using fiber that’s got a pretty uneven, short staple length and I think this is the best way I have to make a usable yarn out of it at my current skill level.

A cake of yarn in a long gradient - yellow and orange in the middle, changing via bright red to a deep red on the outside. Underneath it is a skein of handspun yarn made with this gradient yarn and some basic undyed wool fiber. It’s clearly a beginner’s work but it’s usable, and the gradient yarn alternating with the undyed fiber produces a fun speckled look.

We’ve got four skeins of yarn and a spool of yarn now. The skein onto the far left is undyed speckled with yellow, the second to left has some orange mixed in. The third’s speckles are a true orange, and the one to the right of that has orangey red speckles. The yarn still on the spool has deep red speckles. Together, the yarns look like a gradient, but a bit more toned down.

I dyed a skein of yarn I spun on my spindle, using dried chestnut peels I had left over from when I made horse chestnut detergent last autumn. I had hoped for more color variation because of how unequally I spread the peels and how little I moved it around. But it’s still a very pretty color.

My first attempt at making (vegan) stroopwafels! Cutting them isn’t nearly as hard as I thought it would be. Not eating them all right now, on the other hand, is.

Nine stroopwafels, a vegan version of a Dutch treat consisting of a thin waffle sliced in half and filled with a mixture of margarine, sugar sirup and cinnamon, laying on a too old plastic cutting board with a sheet of parchment paper on top. How long will they remain there? Until approximately 10 minutes after my kids get home. How long will my sense of victory and connection to the homeland remain? Probably also about 10 minutes.

A hand (mine, if you must know) holding a nibbled-on stroopwafel to show off the evenness of the layer of filling. It is very even indeed. Not pictured is the smell of cookie, caramel and cinnamon, nor the comforting warmness of the fresh waffle.

Sure, the world is pretty terrible right now, but at least I got to enjoy my egg fitting perfectly on this ladle today.

A silver coloured gravy ladle is perfectly, delicately, tenderly cradling an egg. From this angle, the egg looks perfectly round, its matte shell a lovely contrast with the shiny nest around it.

We see the egg and ladle from the side now, proudly held up by a hand whose owner stopped getting gel manicures not that long ago and is in the middle of growing out the damage. We sense the photographer’s satisfaction at the two objects fitting together perfectly from this second angle as well, as if made for each other. Soon, the ladle will be in the dishwasher and the egg will be cracked and eaten, this moment but a pleasant memory. But for now, all is right with the world.
