At a time when rights are too often portrayed as abstract or divisive, its enduring lesson is simple: when human rights are protected, everyone benefits.

Born from the lessons of the Holocaust and the determination to protect human dignity, the Act has helped families stay together, safeguarded freedom of religion and enabled people to hold public authorities to account.

Today we celebrate the anniversary of the #HumanRightsAct. More than a legal milestone, it is a practical tool that helps ordinary people live with #dignity, #fairness and #security.

The evening brought together people from a range of faiths and backgrounds, united by a commitment to building a more tolerant, compassionate and united society. The message that emerged throughout the evening was one of the strength that comes from working together across differences.

In this season of reflection and renewal, Jewish tradition encourages us to think not only of ourselves, but also of our #responsibilities to others and of the kind of society we wish to build together.

The ECHR is not just a legal text, it’s a moral compass guiding justice, fairness, and compassion. From freedom of expression to protection from violence, the ECHR ensures dignity for every person, no matter who they are. Let’s protect the protections that protect us all.

Inspired by Jewish values of dignity, justice and responsibility, we are raising funds to ensure human rights are protected and upheld where they are needed most. fundnation.org/renecassin This is about more than awareness. It is about action. Human rights should not depend on luck.

On 17 June 1939 the MS St Louis reached Antwerp, and 288 Jewish lives were saved when the UK offered refuge. Today, we must uphold that same commitment: safe routes, dignity and protection for all who seek sanctuary.

The recommendation to improve data recording standards is a bedrock from which to improve outcomes for patients from racialised minority backgrounds. At the same time, the review recommends a vastly improved EDI training process.

Through our role convening the Jewish Everyday Rights Forum, we have heard first-hand about how racism towards Jews is experienced both through direct discrimination as well as everyday instances of ignorance and inhospitality.

We welcome the findings of the Mann review. Racism in the NHS is a major barrier in stopping minority communities from accessing their right to health.

These naïve changes do not make the system fairer. They do not make people safer. And they do not uphold the values this country prides itself on. A humane asylum system is possible, but it requires thoughtful leadership which respects the evidence as well as human rights.

Rene Cassin @renecassin.bsky.social · 02/03/2026
Today’s announced reforms move the UK even further away from a compassionate, strategic approach to asylum. These constant reactive changes to the asylum process prove what we and many others have long said: policies built on deterrence, hostility, and headline‑driven politics do not work.
