The Palms at Indian Head in Borrego Springs — a mid-century desert hideaway tucked right up against the mountains, with the original lodge framed by palms and the pool waiting out front. Shot from a lounge chair across the deck, taking in the architecture, the lap lanes, and that rugged peak rising behind the roofline. This place has hosted Hollywood for decades, and you can still feel it. A great fit if you love mid-century desert architecture, classic California resorts, or the quiet glamour of Anza-Borrego.

Sunlight streams through gaps in a bridge, Ilighting girders and gravel.

Edits in Lightroom:
Cropped, masks and light panel adjustments to increase contrast between highlights and shadows. Color panel adjustments to cool shadows and warm the highlights. Vignette. And a white frame for the heck of it!

While I was painting this depiction of California's coastline, I wanted it to feel like a flurry of impressionistic paint strokes just fell onto a canvas and just happened to arrange themselves into the shapes of waves and cliffs. To me, that is the beauty of impressionism: lots of small, independent brush strokes that only resolve into a shape when you step back. In my style of Open Impressionism, I avoid overlapping my brushstrokes. This gives my paintings a fresh, loose look that I feel really draws the viewer in.

I hope this painting draws you in and makes you feel like you are standing on the edge of a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
