#OTD in 2006, Anna Politkovskaya--Russian investigative journalist & human rights defender--was murdered in her apt building in Moscow. #PressFreedom She exposed state corruption, opposed the Chechen conflict & wrote "Putin's Russia," a book critical of his rise to power & authoritarian shift.
A serious portrait-style photograph of Russian journalist, author, and human rights activist Anna Politkovskaya (August 30, 1958 – October 7, 2006). Globally revered for her fearless exposure of human rights abuses in Chechnya and her staunch criticism of Vladimir Putin, she looks slightly off-camera with a solemn, resolute, and deeply contemplative expression. Her face is framed by her signature silver-gray hair, parted down the middle and tucked behind her ears, revealing long, slender gold bar earrings. She wears oval, wire-rimmed gold glasses and a crisp, white collared shirt that stands out sharply against the composition. She is in the right two-thirds of the frame, balanced by a soft-focused, bright outdoor background of green and white bokeh on the left. The lighting is soft and even, highlighting her focused gaze. The overall mood is serious, reflective, and dignified, serving as a powerful visual testament to her legacy as a champion of press freedom who paid the ultimate price for her investigative work.

English physician & epidemiologist Dr. Alice Stewart is best-known for her pioneering research in the 1950s that established a strong link between prenatal X-ray exposure and childhood leukemia. Her work influenced radiation protection standards. She was born #OTD in 1906. #WomenInSTEM #MedSky
Black-and-white photograph of English physician and pioneering epidemiologist Dr. Alice Stewart (1906–2002) working at her desk, symbolizing her groundbreaking research linking prenatal X-ray exposure to childhood leukemia. The composition positions Dr. Stewart on the left side of the frame, angled slightly toward the camera. She sits at a wooden desk with her body turned forward, leaning her forearms against the surface. Holding a pen in her right hand, she is captured in the act of writing on loose-leaf papers, looking directly at the viewer with a slight, knowing smile and an intelligent, engaged expression. Her dark hair is short, textured, and styled in loose curls around her face. She wears a crisp, light-colored medical lab coat over a textured collared shirt or blouse. The setting is a research lab or office environment. Positioned prominently in the background on the desk to her left is a large, classic black compound microscope. Stacks of research papers, documents, and reference materials are scattered across the workspace. The overall mood is intellectual, professional, and deeply focused, capturing a legendary scientist whose rigorous data collection transformed global radiation protection standards.

#OTD in 1918, the US Navy Secretary granted authorization for women to enlist in the Marines for shore-duty roles. Opha May Johnson was first in line out of 1000s of eager applicants & became the first woman to enlist in the United States Marine Corps (#USMC). #WWI #WomensHistory
A black-and-white studio portrait of Opha May Johnson (1878–1955), the historic first woman to enlist in the United States Marine Corps. Seated, she is angled toward the left while facing the camera with a calm, confident expression and a slight, pleasant smile. She wears a crisp, structured World War I-era Marine Corps uniform, including a dark wool jacket with a buttoned front, a pointed collar, a small collar pin, shoulder epaulets, and a matching fabric belt with a prominent buckle. A dark, folded side cap sits tilted on her styled, short hair, prominently displaying the Marine Corps Eagle, Globe, and Anchor emblem. She rests a slender stick or riding crop across her lap, gently held in her left hand. The background is a soft, dark, mottled studio backdrop that puts the focus entirely on her. The composition is a classic, formal military portrait, projecting a dignified, trailblazing, and historic mood.

A cow, standing in front of the dovecote in Bruton, Somerset, about a month ago. Lovely town. Beautiful architecture. Had a chat with a really nice lady from an old farming family after I took this. Sadly quite a few stuck-up down-from-London snotbags live there these days and houses cost a fortune as a result.

A historical photograph of Dr. Sally Kristen Ride (May 26, 1951 – July 23, 2012)—the first American woman in space—inside the flight deck of the Space Shuttle Challenger during the STS-7 mission in June 1983. Dr. Ride is positioned in the center of the frame from the chest up with a warm, engaged smile. She wears a light-blue NASA flight jumpsuit adorned with an American flag patch on her left shoulder, a NASA insignia on her chest, and a name tag that reads "SALLY." A lightweight communications headset rests on her curly, dark brown hair, with a thin microphone curving toward her mouth. Her right hand adjusts a component of the headset wire near her ear. The background is filled with the dense, intricate instrumentation of the shuttle's overhead and aft control panels, packed with gray switches, dials, and circuit breakers. The tight framing, soft interior lighting, and candid composition emphasize a focused yet calm atmosphere, documenting a milestone moment for women in STEM and space exploration.

A black-and-white studio portrait of Dr. Susan La Flesche Picotte (1865–1915), the historic reformer celebrated as the first Native American woman to earn a medical degree in the United States. In a bust-up composition against a dark, textured backdrop, she is positioned slightly turned to the side while facing the camera directly. She looks forward with an intelligent, steady, and composed expression, her dark hair neatly swept up away from her face into a soft bun. She wears a Victorian-era garment featuring a high-necked collar made of a contrasting, intricately patterned light fabric with fine floral or geometric motifs. This collared section is framed by a square, dark lace trim on her darker, structured bodice, which has modest pleating and slight puffing at the shoulders. The soft studio lighting emphasizes her prominent cheekbones and the calm, dignified mood of the portrait, embodying her historic legacy as an enduring pioneer of Indigenous health and civil rights.

Painter Mary Cassatt (born #OTD 1844) was the only American to fully integrate into the Paris Impressionists' inner circle. While celebrated for her paintings, her true unsung legacy lies in her role as a radical intellectual & a powerhouse of the internat'l art market. #art #artsky #Impressionism
In this formal black-and-white studio portrait from approximately 1914, Mary Cassatt (1844–1926) is captured in her later years, exuding the authority of a seasoned intellectual and art-world powerhouse. Cassatt, the only American to fully integrate into the Paris Impressionist circle, faces the camera directly with a steady, unflinching gaze and a neutral, dignified expression. She is opulently dressed in a dark coat featuring voluminous fur trim on the shoulders and a large fur muff resting in her lap. She wears a long string of pearls and a dramatic black hat topped with a massive, explosive arrangement of dark feathers. The composition is a classic three-quarter length portrait against a mottled, neutral studio backdrop, focusing entirely on her formidable presence. The mood is somber and commanding, reflecting her status as a radical advisor to international collectors and a fierce advocate for women’s suffrage. Historically, this image represents Cassatt just before her eyesight failed, standing as a final testament to the "unsung" business genius who helped shape the American cultural landscape. This oil painting titled "Summertime," created around 1894 by the American Impressionist Mary Cassatt (1844–1926), depicts two young women in a small boat on a sun-dappled pond. Cassatt, a pioneer who broke into the male-dominated Parisian art world, captures a candid moment of leisure. One woman leans over the side of the boat, her gaze fixed on the water, wearing a long-sleeved pink dress and a wide-brimmed brown hat adorned with a white flower. Beside her, a second woman in a light blue sleeveless dress and a straw sunhat sits upright, looking toward the same point. The water around them is a vibrant tapestry of rapid, broken brushstrokes in shades of deep blue, violet, and shimmering gold, reflecting the midday sun. Two ducks swim nearby—one white and partially obscured, the other a mallard with a dark green head in the foreground. The composition is tight and intimate, utilizing an elevated perspective that eliminates the horizon line, a technique inspired by Japanese woodblock prints. The mood is one of tranquil, quiet observation, typical of Cassatt's dedication to documenting the private, lived experiences of women with dignity and psychological depth. This work is historically significant for its mastery of Impressionist light and color theory, cementng Cassatt's legacy as a vital force in modern art.
