Jane Roberts @redjane67.bsky.social · 58mThe average age in these assisted living facilities is 85 yo (83 for LTC) That means the tsunami of the boomers is mostly still independent. They haven't hit this housing sector yet and it's already in crisis. Peak will hit in 20 years. 100
Jane Roberts @redjane67.bsky.social · 1hWe all know you can't get into LTC for love nor money. So this place has created a nice niche for themselves. It's so expensive that ppl leave after a short time because they can't afford it. But there's a endless soorce of ppl waiting to get into less expensive places who are desperate. 110
Jane Roberts @redjane67.bsky.social · 1hMy mother is now in what has to be the most expensive assisted living residence in the GTA. I've been over there a few times now and am beginning to understand why she could get in there on short notice even though it's a small residence. 120

Jane Roberts @redjane67.bsky.social · 22hThat's it. That's my theory. Of course it's strongly influenced by being brought up by one of those 1950's nurses who would roll her eyes at my Dad's home remedies and when they were dating she told him not to spit on the sidewalk because that's how TB was spread. 000
Jane Roberts @redjane67.bsky.social · 22hContrast that to today's 30-somethings. 1-2% have nursing training. Only 50% have a partner who they could educate/influence and they also have fewer siblings. So now only ~5% of the population has the training or is closely related to someone who does. No more critical mass. 200
Jane Roberts @redjane67.bsky.social · 22hI believe that this education gave us a critical mass if science based knowledge re disease in the community as the percentage of the pop that either had the training or were married to or a sibling of a trained nurse added up to ~40% of the child bearing cohort. 100
Jane Roberts @redjane67.bsky.social · 22hIn the 1950's between 10 -20% of the females graduating high school enrolled in nurse training which high a high component of public health training. Plus they would get to see first hand the horrific toll of measles, mumps, polio,TB, etc. 000
Jane Roberts @redjane67.bsky.social · 22hAI helped me get to the actual numbers quickly so I could test out my theory about the decline in common sense public health knowledge in the general population since my mother graduated from nursing school in the 1950's. 200
