I’ve been listening to Altered Carbon. I love the noir detective genera as much as the next guy, more even. but I’ve had to keep my 10 minute sleep timer on so I don’t fall down the rabbit hole. Listen to too much of this stuff and it changes you. I’ve seen too many kids hooked on m4bs to fall […]

I'll go into specifics. The server and shared laptop get tagged identities that don't expire, people's personal devices keep user identities. It's just an open network no acls because this is a low risk simple environment and more importantly I do not know what ports their apps use.

While construction is going on their server is at home on a desk, but it would sure be nice to connect to it from a laptop. The Unifi hardware does vpns very well, however #tailscale is perfect for this. Wherever the computers are during this build out, they'll have access from phones and laptops.

I need the #it equivalent of a thimble. I crimped and punched down about 30 drops and my fingertips are so raw it’s unbelievable.
A painted piece of plywood ready for a rack to be installed. There is an umbilical of about 40 CAT6 cables and an open circuit breaker.A rack and security system with lots of wires in it.

This weekend I wired the network for my wife’s soon to open book store / pottery studio. It was so much work. My god. But I learned a ton. And I’m quite proud of my work. I also learned how to drive a scissor lift!
Me near the ceiling of an under construction bookstore. I’m on a lift! There’s a light fixture next to me!

You have to bring your whole mind to bear on painting; to carry on, to go forward. Painting is not making paintings; it is a development of awareness. And with this awareness, your work changes, but very slowly. —Agnes Martin

The log of every one-off alarm I’ve ever set in the iPhone clock app is an interesting insight to how I’ve clamped my life to the nearest 5 minute intervals. Not a useful insight but interesting nonetheless the less. What if we never had trains? And therefore never had clocks that really […]

Actors with Tokio – Alice Ryhl
This article is about building actors with Tokio directly, without using any actor libraries such as Actix. This turns out to be rather easy to do, however there are some details you should be aware of:

The actor pattern I landed on (I know about actix, I’m doing it myself right now) has a struct that we’re free to pass around that holds the channels ands methods for two way async communication. So you call new() and it kicks off the actor and gives you a remote control. I love it, I’ve never […]

I explored ways I can share state and data across threads. From an external rwlock to atomic swapping of references, to internal locking, to message passing. I landed on message passing to a “db” I made around a BTreeMap. It is hardly the most straightforward (or performant) but it’s fun! I’m […]

The poly isn’t smooth and it’s probably because the wood isn’t *that* smooth even after all the sanding I did. I’ll probably hand sand it again and then again after the first coat and second if I do a second. I should probably research how to apply poly good. These may be ugly stairs but I […]

If you remember my stairs I added an extra 2x4 half lap to the bottom posts and started to poly them. I need to remove and glue up one of the banister’s though as it started to split at the top where the (countersunk!) screws went in. It’s ugly but it’s finally feeling sturdy.

I need to wrap this up while I’m at work; - Location (usual, planned, commuting, etc) would make a store and forward network really work. A “device ID” + “location” scheme would be really interesting to explore - Interstellar messaging with “com relays” from the exforce book series is probably […]

I understand meshcore handles route changes by retrying a few times and broadcasting for updates. Since there’s no logical topology, route discovery is a network wide broadcast to X hops. It uses delivery responses to build a static route to the destination. This is honestly pretty great for […]

Also this isn’t exactly how Kademlia works, the address book idea it proposed is paramount and super cool. Instead of keeping everyone’s address you keep info on 10 people in your country, 10 people in your state, 10 people in your city, 10 in your county, 10 in your neighborhood, and 10 people […]

*Without considering distance or movement* You could use closeness of a nearby devices ID to a target ID to decide who to give priory to. If you see an ID close to the target give them the message. Give it out X times but only to IDs closer to the receiver’s ID than the previous person […]

So in a Kademlia(ish) dht data is hashed to a 160bit int and device ids are also a 160bit int. You publish the data to a number of “closest” nodes you can find (discovery is a very cool out of scope thing) and it will hold onto it as long as it wants. Usually republishing every 24 hours to […]

The problem would become storage and bandwidth maybe? You can store a lot on an sd card but you probably don’t want to talk to everyone. A DHT style address book would probably help decide who you talk to and transfer messages to as you walk around. The problem isn’t just address closeness it’s […]
