Nobody warned me how much time supervising MAs takes up (or at least, supervising them with modicum of care and encouragement). The MA thesis model is brutal: big piece of work, little time in which to do it, a major step up for many students. Are PhD supervisons as intense?

Ugh, what a shame. I'll never forget taking a British friend to the Gemäldegalerie - he was amazed at the opportunity to see so many amazing works up close, in nearly empty galleries. Then I reminded him that we'd paid 12€ for the privilege.

I sat in on my first public Austrian PhD defence last night. My viva was a long time ago, and I remember it as a very gentle and enjoyable experience, but bloody hell i’m glad there wasn’t an audience.

This piece articulates exactly what I found alienating about being Jewish and living in Germany. People were both disappointed and disapproving when I wasn't Jewish enough for whatever version of my people they expected me to be. It frequently felt like they doubted my "pedigree".
