Always a good time to recommend this fabulous steampunk book, heavy on the punk and with an actual critique of Victorian social norms.

OK this is THE WEREWOLF OF WHITECHAPEL, my bestselling novel and #1 in the Miss Sharp's Monsters trilogy! DRACULA meets ENOLA HOLMES in this tongue in cheek romp set in a version of 1890s Europe where all the ruling families are monsters. It's a hoot, get it here: books2read.com/u/mYAjLG
Image showing THE WEREWOLF OF WHITECHAPEL by Suzannah Rowntree against a red background, surrounded by tropes: "1890s Europe, if the royals were monsters!" "slowburn romance" "female friendship" "Dracula vibes" "who dun it?" "intrepid lady's maid" and "witty banter"

ICYMI: @kitvaria.bsky.social reviews @suzannahrowntree.bsky.social's novella, A Study in Sirens! - JI 🐉 "Sometimes you just want a quick escape into a world you already love, and that is exactly what this novella delivers." fantasy-faction.com/2025/a-study... #booksky 💙📚🪐 #historicalfantasy
The book cover sits in the center of the image. It shows an antique black and white photo of a female opera singer from the Victorian era. She is dressed in armor, including a helmet with a feather, a spear in her right hand, and a round shield in her left. The bottom half of the photo is covered with a magenta pink splash of paint. The background of the image is a watercolor wash in the same pink color.

While good points are made here - there HAS been a lot of hysteria over Streep!Aslan, and I got mad at my most anticipated read of 2026 for too slavishly quoting the Inklings - the point being missed here is that if you want to adapt a classic fantasy with a feminine deity, you don't. do. Narnia!

Like... it's just not an operatic story, you know? It's kind of like the argument Billy Wilder made about Sunset Boulevard being an opera rather than a musical. There are a few things I appreciate about the LOTR musical but like, that's opera material lol.

Look, as someone who'd love a rock opera based on the Ainulindalë that would definitely make Tolkien spin in his grave, I just... don't think Narnia is the kind of story you want for that kind of take. And don't get me wrong, I have ZERO interest in engaging in any kind of culture war about this lol

This concept is still occupying my brain, btw. Over lunch I have concluded: a) he's an assassin who uses a thin high-tensile wire retractable skipping rope as combined nunchucks/garotte/bolas b) I want Blumineck to play him in the surely inevitable hit TV show.

I really don't like the Aslan genderswap. If you want to adapt a classic children's fantasy where God is a woman, George MacDonald's THE PRINCESS AND THE GOBLIN is RIGHT THERE, or Madeleine L'Engle's A WRINKLE IN TIME.

It's like the (awful) new adaptation of A Tale of Two Cities, my favorite novel. I'm not upset they showed Sydney and Lucie having sex because it's woke. I'm upset because it's completely out of character. People can prefer to stick with the author's intention and not be horrible people. 2/

You can prefer Aslan be portrayed by a male actor and not be a Neanderthal trad anti-woke culture warrior. Some of the most progressive people I know were hoping the Streep rumors weren't true because it doesn't fit the character they know. It's not always about culture wars. 1/

how about some good news: new cat just dropped!!!!
a photo of a small, spotted wild cat, with orange fur and brown circular markings, staring up with big golden eyes.Meet the First New Cat Species Discovered in 100 Years

A small, spotted tiger cat from Bolivia may just be the beginning of a wave of new small cat species.

This 10-year-old male tiger cat is the first of his species (named Leopardus tilcayo) known to science. He is approximately 18 inches from head to end of body and weighs only 3 pounds, making him smaller than the average domestic cat. This video was captured at the Senda Verde Animal Refuge in Bolivia’s Yungas region, where he currently resides.

Great joke; puts me in mind of the words of the anarchist Pierre-Joseph Proudhon. "Would it not be criminal were some islanders to repulse in the name of property the unfortunate victims of shipwreck struggling to reach the shore? The very idea of such cruelty sickens the imagination."

I think I originally read Jane as a bit of a Pollyanna, but the show makes me reassess Jane as a character with firm and carefully considered convictions, and she can do it when her feelings are very elevated. And Elizabeth can’t quite do that very well!

Holy crap, Jane Austen is brilliant. There’s a clear little streak of Mr Woodhouse in Emma. “Harriet, now that you’ve hung out with me, you’ve met real gentlemen. Doesn’t Mr Martin strike you as inferior? It sure strikes me. Are you not struck by that? You must be struck by that. Of course you are.”

There's a lotta hype out there right now about how AI, which is wrong about basic facts 40+% of the time, is about to destroy humanity, but the step from "we have invented a glorious deity" to "our deity is coming in fire to consume the world" is not a far one and these folx are true idolaters
