I'm a librarian. I think you should read more things. All of these opinions are mine and not (necessarily) anyone else's.

These ads go in the same category as brazen, easily disproven lies after ICE killings. It’s not about persuasion. It’s a display of power. They could have passed them off as PAC-funded. They added “paid for by the U.S. government” because they want us to know they can break the law with impunity.

Most big libraries will purchase most things that are requested of them. I tried to find FPL's specific form, but I couldn't. Here's an old article that talks about the process: thephiladelphiacitizen.org/free-library...
thephiladelphiacitizen.org
Is the Free Library of Philadelphia open to new book requests?
If there's a book you want that's not part of the Free Library of Philadelphia’s collection, will they add it to the catalogue? We find out.

All the polling from multiple pollsters, including GOP ones, points to a massive Democratic wave in the Midterms. If it doesn’t happen there will have been shenanigans that should get people out on the streets. Don’t be diverted by people who try to dismiss it as a conspiracy theory.

And as I've been tracking, it's been eight months since Trump admitted a single refugee into the United States (Biden admitted 100,060 in 2024; white people from South Africa don't count.) There is now no longer a legal path for non-white people to become a U.S. permanent resident or citizen.

Nope! Every state is different but it's almost always property taxes. Some libraries are independent taxing districts (like schools), some are departments of the city/county, etc. But it's certainly helpful to have strong usage numbers when you explain your budget to elected officials...

Firmly agree about the rot in our society and why people dislike us but also c'mon. The Premier League itself was a big cash grab. Super League, etc. Germans were putting ads on the front of their shirts 50 years ago, a Rubicon American sports have still yet to cross.

The Trump admin's latest strategy to mass generate removal orders is diabolical: - Take a huge group of people with hearings scheduled in late 2026, 2027, or 2028. - Send them a physical letter rescheduling all of their cases to next week. - Those who inevitably miss court get ordered deported.

I think one reason data center outrage is so pronounced is people spent decades recycling and composting and otherwise scrimping to offset energy use and protect clean water, and the second we hit an inflection point for cheap electricity the banking industry said we’re taking all of it, fuck you

Trump doesn’t force people to do bad things. All he did was show people they could get away with being horrible if they really wanted to, and a lot of powerful people decided they didn’t need to pretend anymore. Especially those in influential positions who could push back but did not.

Ruling against TPS for Haitians, the Trump justices on the Supreme Court have set a new impossible standard for proving discrimination against non-whites: if there is any other reason *in addition* to the racism, the racism doesn’t count www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...
Mullin now sets up an even more impossible double standard. If the government wants to discriminate against Black people, any pretext will do. “As long as there is a plausible basis—any plausible articulable basis—for the government’s action, then the Court will look to that basis as sufficient,” Aderson Francois, a law professor at Georgetown University, told me, “even in the face of evidence that government actors were motivated by animus.” If a Black person wants to prove they’ve been discriminated against, however, no amount of evidence will suffice.

“This Court sees race when it wants to, and blinds itself to racism in most other cases,” Melissa Murray, a law professor at NYU, told me. “It’s hard to imagine how egregious the statement would have to be to be considered ‘overtly racial’.”
