They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

I do sigh when I get to one bc it means I need to reorient my brain from what I was expecting. If I know what I'm getting into then I'm all in. Be Holding by Ross Gay? Reading a Larry Levis poem? Yes please. Turning the page of a print journal to a 4 pager...oof, sure, ok, fine.

That is the only way this should go. Unless the teacher is a jerk using dyslexia as a pejorative instead of a diagnosis, this is the process: identify the issue, advocate around and address the issue with an evaluation process, codify diagnosis and accomodations with an IEP.

So the rule is standardized tests don't matter at all unless your 9yo gets a perfect score and then they mean everything. That's their only function. Yes, my 9yo got a perfect score.

Annie Dillard has not only informed my writing as one of the first and best (nature) writers I've encountered but also her arguments for attention inform how I view life and what it means to be human.

A wooden door in front of everything. A door
on my country. A door on the lake. My poems

prefer wooden hunting dogs. If I say there is a
door on my heart in the poem, then there is.

Now I can open this door. The door is a short
door though. I must kneel down to crawl in, drag

my body through with my wooden elbows. I bump
into my wooden mother who is also crawling

in my heart. She smiles so large at me that her
