The title character in DUNGEON CRAWLER CARL has the vibe of a guy who would say he doesn't get trans people, but then wouldn't hesitate to stand between them and any threat.

Can't believe there are now insane bans on books about pets, instead of understandable bans on books about queer kids.

The Bible story I think about most often is Naaman not wanting to do a simple thing for results and wanted to do "some great thing" instead. This is what it's like for people who will go to great lengths to "improve the world," except they won't do anything that improves the world. Too common.

We don't need to make some reaching argument that having certain items on the shelf is a good thing in itself. We should be able to say those titles do more harm than good, but also that a policy of broad inclusion is best...even when it does some real harm too.

Over my career, I've known a good number of library workers who have admitted to quietly discarding items from the shelves for being hate speech. They're right about what those titles are, but I council people to let them be and just avoid doing any extra promotion for them.

Did they ever say WHY Gordon was so good at slaying? Because it has to look ~ridiculous~ for anyone in-universe who doesn't realize he's EDGE OF TOMORROWing it.

I'm enjoying playing STILL WAKES THE DEEP. Nothing has given me more of a HALF-LIFE early levels vibe. You know, before Gordon Freeman turned out to be a combat prodigy. Gameplay is a bit more ALIEN: ISOLATION in character though. It's in Scottish brogue with subtitles in standard English.

respectfully, you are absolutely wrong. being banned is *always* bad for authors, even in the EXCEEDINGLY rare case that they make some list that people go to. because the goal is for most of us that KIDS have access. and ANY kid that doesn't is an arrow straight thunk to my heart
I still remember when getting banned in visiting on your book cover was a guarantee of extra sales. this is different, but I think there is still some merit in being banned. it depends on who's going the banning and why

There’s a lot of back and forth, like “omg can you believe this totally innocuous book got banned?” To me, that inherently sets up a category of “yeah, I totally see why that one was banned” that is useful to banners. “Why was it banned?” “Queer.” “Oh, yeah, makes sense.”

Thinking about this deleted post. "How was I supposed to know?" needs to be treated like gun safety. We shouldn't just expect that half the kids will play with guns until they shoot someone and have a learning experience.
Shawn. At fleshpockets BlueSky handle: I don't mean to downplay sexual assault but I also have known a lot of good people who had to learn healthy boundaries by violating someone else's and never forgetting the experience.

It's really easy to determine whether a book is appropriate for the age group: consult the publisher and professional reviews. Is it appropriate for a particular parent's view that interracial marriage is wrong for their kids to read about? Maybe not.

Today I learned, after much struggle, that tire pressure monitors operate relative to something close to sea level, so if you drive at around 7k ft or 2100+ meters elevation (for random example), they show as 3-4ish PSI too low.

One issue is that men who "respect women" and put women on a pedestal only mean that for the women currently on that pedestal. The precarious need to be above to not be below.

And there certainly are books so bad that most readers come away worse for the experience. Supposedly informational books that are profoundly wrong but you have to be an expert to know how, for example.

No one can say a word about the writing in the RESIDENT EVIL movie, unless they want to say it needs to be much worse to match the games. I've played like 8 of them if we don't count remakes and they're all incredibly stupid. The ~atmosphere~ is why I kept playing.

You don't have to say "from the river to the sea" to say "Free Palestine" and you don't have to say "Free Palestine" to say Israel is committing genocide on Gaza But if you just say the situation is bad, that's indistinguishable from being upset that you have to hear about upsetting things.
