I thought that I might run a canal based theme this week so, with that in mind, here's "Regent's Canal" by Elwin Hawthorne from 1934. #ElwinHawthorne #EastLondonGroup

'Cast Shadows,' (1891) is the perfect example of Emile Friant's paintings during the late 19thC, the majority show a sympathetic theme that stresses devotion and personal reflection, a specific meaning or mood akin to some religious works by William Bouguereau.

Dazzle camouflage was created during WW1 to protect British ships from German artillery - it works by making it difficult to estimate range of speed and heading. Edward Wadsworth supervised the design of of the camouflage patterns. This is his 'Dazzle Ships in Drydock,' from 1919

'The Parish Bazaar,' (c1947) Norman Blamey was a consummate draughtsman; his early work specialised in capturing everyday events. This painting is based on a Christmas sale, which took place annually in the Parish Hall of St Pancras Old Church in Crowndale Road.

Movie theatre marquee and display for Bride of Frankenstein (1935)
During the 1935 theatrical release of Bride of Frankenstein, movie theaters across the world designed highly extravagant marquee displays and front-of-house marketing. Exhibitors went all-out by installing giant cutout heads of Boris Karloff's Monster looking down over the street, converting box office structures into the Monster's face, and even putting mock operating tables or laboratories directly into theater lobbies. A mannequin bride is on a table top laying down with a first-aid kit nearby.
