Isn’t corporate capitulation to what are clearly the absurd whims of a madman a serious problem in its own right, and a battleground that public negative feedback (flack) might have some impact on?

Some of the other things in the list are downstream of this, for example nature of social and political institutions (nations in the periphery of the world system almost necessarily have weak states, causing political instability, corruption, etc)

This is a good list but is importantly missing position in the structure of the world system

I am certainly a Charles Baker appreciator. Pan-American Clipper, Mexican Firing Squad, Remember the Maine …

I forgot to reply to say thank you for posting! I love your notecard. I do not love a Jimmie Roosevelt, alas. Made a lot of them at a job long ago, and I never really got it. I thought the flavors were not harmonious and it was too sweet. But I’m probably due to give it a fresh look!

Ha, that is such a strange drink. How do you make it, and do you enjoy it? Charles Baker has a lot of gems but I can't say I have found that to be one of them!

For example: online shopping behavior doesn’t necessarily express consumer preferences more directly than brick-and-mortar. B&M stores had to earn customer loyalty. Online shopping is more oligopolistic, so vendors need worry less about customer satisfaction; hence they stock inferior goods.

Dan @rdsmth.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
I think this view is mistaken due to its positivism. Consumer preferences are not an independent variable with respect to market structure and product quality. They are constantly being formed and re-formed in dialectical relationship with those things.

Huge improvement! Great cassoulet and some decent frescoes right on that square at Le Bibent.

Sounds like a perfect opportunity for the mother cities to annex them, as they should have done long ago

I feel so much contempt for the president and trustees of the University of Chicago. What they are doing to it is unforgivable. The traditional Core, however imperfect, was peerless. It was a whole world unto itself. Without it, the College is just another college.

There are self-serving political reasons for this too, but ideologically, this flows directly from getting housing issues wrong. Left-NIMBYism is a serious conceptual error that will lead them into a political dead end, or cause them to abandon left politics entirely

specifically, urban socialism is the ideology of a Democratic party that is willing to fight as hard for the (good, positive) wishes of their voters as the Republican party is for theirs (bad, regressive)

The pro-housing position is, in fact, the correct socialist position.

It's worth noting that while James Redfield was one of a kind, he was also probably the final living avatar of the Hutchins vision of the University of Chicago. With him, a whole world passes.

CDOT Commissioner Cheaks should announce on Monday morning that the city will be phasing out "door zone" bike lanes starting immediately, as they are inherently deadly.

It's the same as the time I tried to get my toddler to try ice cream and he screamed and cried and insisted he hated it. He was wrong, obviously. So are the transportation haters. A better world is possible and even they would love it

For sure, I’d definitely allow bike contraflows on all the small streets - the green arrows refer to car traffic only, and the barriers would have to be the filtering kind that allows bikes through but blocks cars.

Dan @rdsmth.bsky.social · 11/03/2026
Orange = a median or some other means of blocking cars from passing through and forcing them to turn

West Town. I tried to draw up some diagrams of one-way traffic patterns, since Chicago's grid system is much less regular than the one in the Eixample, so the 3x3 superblocks they use wouldn't work for us. Not sure if that's what you have in mind, but here's an example for one small area.

Expropriate all of these various media properties -- Twitter, Paramount, CBS, etc -- and hand them over to political allies (or better yet, break them up first) on day one of the next trifecta. By midterms you'll have a whole new culture that everyone just accepts.

This means he flatly isn’t up to the job, and if elected, he’ll almost certainly be a temporary reprieve before the fascists return to power, similar to Biden. I’d vote for him over any Republican, but in a real sense he is below the minimum standard for a real opposition leader in this situation

What we need is for the right to be totally defeated and crushed, and Newsom has shown us up front that there is at least one area in which he wants to yield to them, for no reason and because he has a bad understanding of both the politics and substance of the matter.
100
Dan @rdsmth.bsky.social · 16/02/2026
I agree with your strategic logic, but I see the reason in being totally unsatisfied with Newsom: someone like him, who concedes ground to the right on any issue at all—e.g. trans rights, quite central to our fascist predicament—will be temperamentally unable to fully get us out of that predicament

Though arguably it’s in reckoning with the obstacles to a fully realized liberalism that the path to socialism lies …
020
Dan @rdsmth.bsky.social · 29/01/2026
The full realization of liberal values, which in the history of liberalism has never yet been achieved, always has been a revolutionary doctrine. It is a bright spot in our dark times that we are all being forced to remember it!

The political press very clearly understands “truth” as a social agreement, a compromise position between everyone important enough to have an opinion. It did not reflect on how this would allow dedicated liars to go all-in on lies again and again and dramatically shift the position.

It's for that reason that I really think it should just be outright banned, whatever constitutional issues there are with it be damned. The party is beyond redemption and every member is a criminal by their mere membership.

What we call social media (which are really *mass* social media in which large publics participate; forums and chat rooms were social media too but without the mass character) are the culmination of a historical series, and we can begin to see its effects by mapping the effects of each prior stage
000
Dan @rdsmth.bsky.social · 05/01/2026
From books to telegraph and telephone, to early more or less unidirectional mass media such as cinema and television, later bidirectional and many-directional ones (usenet/forums, chat rooms, AIM), and ultimately to mass social media with potentially unbounded participant frameworks (such as this)

We all know the internet and esp social media have transformed society, but the mechanism and nature of these changes aren’t well theorized. Anthropologists should illuminate this by tracing the history of the disconnection of the social location of interaction from its physical location

But once you've seen a few movies by a handful of the greats of world cinema, you've been exposed to two or three new paradigms and you learn to watch with a mind more open to yet further ones, and that difficulty disappears. That's when you can start to actually experience the movies themselves
