It is the birthday, in 1933, of Joan Murrell Owens, the first Black woman to earn a doctorate in geology in the US. She was born in Miami, Florida, where her father was a dentist. He took the family on weekend fishing trips, where Joan fell in love with the ocean. #Science #MarineBiology #Education

She attended the historically black Fisk University, which did not have a major in marine biology. So, she studied fine art and psychology, then earned a Master’s degree in guidance counseling with an emphasis on reading therapy. She went on to teach, first in a psychiatric hospital, then at Howard University. She also taught disadvantaged high school students, setting up learning programs that continue to influence education across the U.S.

Still, Owens wanted to get back to the ocean. And 16 years after earning her first degree, she enrolled at George Washington University and combined courses in geology and zoology. Taken together, these allowed her to study marine biology. In 1985, Owens became the first Black woman in the U.S. to earn a doctorate in geology.

She could not scuba dive because she had traits of sickle-cell anemia. So she began researching specimens already collected in the Smithsonian. Her studies of button corals produced a body of work that revealed new information about deep-sea habitats and the corals’ evolutionary relationships. Owens also discovered new species and a new genus.
