Also, as you might imagine, survivors had horrific experiences trying to get their images taken down. According to the survivors we interviewed, web platforms did better 10 years ago. Which makes their institutional betrayals even more enraging. We’re going backwards. Here’s a link to that study:

But on the other side of the coin is just how challenging it can be to get work reviewed in a timely manner...some of my recent papers were in a review doom loop for multiple years before getting published. Research riding the zeitgeist increases the risk for rushed, poor quality work.

This critique is in the absolute spirit of what Scott Jacques envisioned. It also highlights the issues with preprints/working papers and with peer review, which is quite broken. The rush to publish/ be cited is in tension with the quite reasonable position Mr. Jordan takes.

It would've been easy to bash Flock in Senate today, but the reality is that this crisis would've not happened had there been any form of regulation or guard rails. So, let's demand them. And let's vote with the same ferocity we post with.

Basically Labor have a shrinking amount of time to push hard and change the facts on the ground, or the next time they lose power, the Coalition and One Nation will take an axe to everything to aimed at helping get Australians off fossil fuels just like Tony Abbott did in 2013.

How did we get to the VERY LOW BAR of "we need a law to ensure removal within 48 hours of notification?" 48 hours is an eternity and allows abusive content to be shared across other platfrorms. This is so amazingly screwed.

The beauty of this is that Guttenfelder is covering these men the way they have always wanted: dripping in tacticool gear, in action, looking down their sites at an enemy which surrounds them. In doing so, he reveals who they are. They imagine themselves heroes; he shows they are villains.

To say it has no use is a problem. To not know what kind of output it produces is also a problem. To not think about how people will use/misuse it, also a problem. Academics don't have to incorporate it into their workflow, but should play with it to see what it does and how it produces.

AI can help identify terms where you might have an idea/description but don't know the term It can help reduce the reading level of something It can help simplify/create outlines It might help identify PII faster than a human first pass But all of these require further human input to be right.

"Ethically trained" typically means "fine tuned with data acquired with consent". Unless a company or service has clearance for every single piece of training data in their BASE MODEL, it's likely still utilizing protected IP. I don't personally care much until "ethically" is used in marketing.

AI as a shortcut disrupts and damages learning processes. Failure to master fundamental skills & knowledge causes cumulative debt; when it comes due, it will likely be all at once. They must consider the ethics & legality of uploading text. In a job, a mistake could result in them being fired.
