Write into the honey. ... Write into the rain. —Rick Barot
Write into the smudge in the painting where the pink lays into the green. Write into the plush of his lower lip. Write into the light pouring from the oculus above the baroque courtyard. Write into the whippoorwill that sings each morning, bringing in the morning. The two old balloons caught in the branch outside the fourth-floor window. The sky and its gray flannel suit. Write into the person practicing scales but practicing them out of order. Write into the honey. The story he told about the hierarchies of honeybees. The story he told about the man mummified in honey. Write into his white hands. Write into the smell of pomade. Write into the smell of August, a thug of a smell. Write into each trivial but astonishing trick, like roller-skating backwards or snipping thread with your teeth. Write into the rain. Write into its fall, knowing that the only god you can know is gravity.

SONNET FOR THE SECOND- LANGUAGE SPEAKER
What is a word? — Depends on who you ask.
For instance, in the rigid Flemish taal, so many things that feel like words don't pass, and my sprung language doesn't work at all.
My sentences are yet another place where stringent rule-embracers don't agree: to me, an error shows the second face of grammar. The mistakes are what I mean.
The thing I value most in any line— drawn, made, wrote, thought, in fantasy or fact— is flexibility: that, like a spine,
the art supports the mind by which it's maked.
What use is language flattened, dried in books?
Our language lives most when it is mistook.

If you love myths and love reading about the natural world, I highly recommend MYTHOPEDIA by Adrienne Mayor. Organized A to Z, it explores natural phenomena all over the world and related the myths and folklore.

Bower Ashton Library, UWE Bristol
Thursday 2nd April – Friday 31st July 2026An artist's book by Kate Bernstein for World Book Night - A hard cover book which has no spine, the printed paper inside is triangular and unfolds to make the shape of a mountain.A piece for World Book Night by Ray Mackenzie: inspired by the original anonymous introduction to Select Views that later became the justly famous guide to the lakes by Wordsworth. Updated for the 21st century it has a drawing of a drone hovering over the lakes in the shape of a cloud. An artist's book for World Book Night by Tom Sowden. The style of the book is that of the artist Ed Ruscha. It says thirtysix views of steeples. Loosely inspired by the book Seven Steeples by Sara Baume, which is based in Ireland.

Tom adapted a copy of his artist’s book Thirtysix Views of #MtFuji and replaced the images of Mount Fuji with pencil drawings of Ireland’s tallest mountain, Carrauntoohil. Another mountain he hasn’t climbed.
