Raging against the dying of the LPs by finding time to play Swans albums right the way through (on CD). Today it has been Birthing, played loud & soundtracking chores, sitting, dancing, more chores, cooking, cleaning and finally just listening with my eyes closed.

The album sleeve is a Coil - Time Machines -esque mysterious black circle or abyss on pale brown / cardboard.

I am not joking when I say this. Soylent Green is now very, very good and these soulless dorks need to (literally) get into it.

Yesterday was a photographing shipping containers through a rainy windscreen kind of day.

A yellow and green shipping container looking mysterious in some trees. I get the feeling they contain something sinister.

Performative reading update: more people talk to you if reading books with colourful covers than books with dark ones. Small sample but seems significant. Tried some performative reading in Hay on Wye but competition there was hard. Stag Dance probably not best option.

Watched Agnes Varda’s Le Bonheur (Happiness) 1964 in a v rare break from football & it turned out to be devastating, sad & very beautiful in a different way. Slow(ish) cinema but mesmerisingly shot & you like everyone in it, despite everything. Very French, very mid-60s. A more complex time. #film

Now reading Vanishing World by Sayaka Murata - similar clipped & neurodiverse delivery to Convenience Store Woman with a strange, lightly surreal tale about the end of sex which weirdly reminds me of some of Houellebecq’s ‘science fiction’.

in 1970, 10-year-old Joel Lipton had a class assignment to write to someone he admired and ask them "What makes a good citizen?" He wrote to Peanuts creator Charles M. Schulz. He got back this letter:

A letter on Charles M. Chulz's stationery with a drawing of Charlie Brown, Snoopy on his doghouse, and a fallen kite:
I think it is more difficult these days to define what makes a good citizen then it has ever been before. Certainly all any of us can do is follow our own conscience and retain faith in our democracy. Sometimes it is the very people who cry out the loudest in favor of getting back to what they call ‘American Virtues’ who lack this faith in our country. I believe that our greatest strength lies always in the protection of our smallest minorities. Sincerely yours, Charles M. Schulz.
