Generative pre-trained transformer was a bit of a revolution. Now we are seeing a pre-trained classifier, Jev, and people are really excited. I like that people are using and learning about “traditional” ML. Go learn scikit-learn, is much easier than PyTorch and runs on your laptop, no cuda needed

AI can be anything we want, anything we can imagine, or the only thing some people can think of. We should worry and care about all the scenarios. But Silicon Valley will Silicon Valley.
screenshot of: Consider: Who pursues their goals with monomaniacal focus, oblivious to the possibility of negative consequences? Who adopts a scorched-earth approach to increasing market share? This hypothetical strawberry-picking AI does what every tech startup wishes it could do — grows at an exponential rate and destroys its competitors until it’s achieved an absolute monopoly. The idea of superintelligence is such a poorly defined notion that one could envision it taking almost any form with equal justification: a benevolent genie that solves all the world’s problems, or a mathematician that spends all its time proving theorems so abstract that humans can’t even understand them. But when Silicon Valley tries to imagine superintelligence, what it comes up with is no-holds-barred capitalism.

The main thesis is that AI can analyze supply and demand better than free markets, so a centrally planned economy could work now. Interesting the word china appears not once. A centrally planned economy and AI leader.

wes anderson style
A whimsical, Wes Anderson–inspired collage imagines the inner workings of an open-weight language model as a meticulously organized archive. Rendered in muted pastels with perfectly symmetrical compositions, the image resembles a vintage movie poster crossed with a dollhouse cutaway.
At the center, a title card reads “THE WEIGHTS” with the subtitle “An Unnecessarily Meticulous Examination of a Language Model.” Surrounding it are a series of miniature scenes: librarians in matching mustard-yellow uniforms catalog billions of parameters in an enormous archive; a museum conservator solemnly presents a single floating-point value (0.00317) inside a glass display case; and four tiny machine rooms labeled Embedding, Attention, MLP, and Layer Norm depict the components of a transformer model as intricate retro-industrial machinery operated by careful technicians.
The bottom row shows a seemingly endless wall of filing cabinets labeled “4096 × 11008 and counting…”, a technical placard listing a model layer, tensor shape, BF16 precision, and rows of numerical weights, and two workers quietly seated at matching desks outside a door labeled Output, beneath framed slogans reading “Trillions of choices.” and “One response. You.”
The overall aesthetic is warm, orderly, and dryly humorous, transforming the vast mathematical complexity of a large language model into an obsessively curated bureaucracy where every parameter has its own perfectly documented place.

Focusing on what they can do, servers, instead of what they can’t, build AI models. In the future this might prove to be where the AI money actually is.
