Mais moi, malheureusement, je ne sais pas voir les moutons à travers les caisses. Je suis peut-être un peu comme les grandes personnes. J'ai dû vieillir.

I’m 1/4 through Chapter 1 of @zephoria.bsky.social’s new ethnography of the US census & I am full-on IN TEARS in my lounge room at 10pm. I’ve aspired to be a “bureaucrat for the revolution” for 25 years & this book is giving my battered old heart words for everything I’ve been striving for
Photo of a page displayed on a Kobo e-reader, saying:

… and yet civil servants dedicate their lives to the pursuit of creating more perfect data. The census cannot ever be truly apolitical given that it is at the heart of the politics of the United States, and yet civil servants never stop pursuing the ideals of nonpartisanship. The persistent tension between ideals and pragmatics is what makes the administrative state so critical to a healthy democracy.
Civil servants serve the public through their dedication and persistence, despite the challenges of the work. And despite having bosses who want to weaponize them.
I see the Census Bureau's civil servants as heroes-not
because I believe in bureaucracy, but because these workers are committed to the ideal version of the American project. [THIS BIT IS HIGHLIGHTED] Public servants toil in the shadows, making consequential choices with little recognition, only to be attacked for trying to make the system work for the people. Too often, they're blamed for the Kafkaesque nightmare in which they operate, even as politicians and advocates quietly configure what they are able to do. [END HIGHLIGHT]
This book is, in many ways, a love letter to those civil servants and the kind of institution that enables them to rise to the occasion. If we want to escape our death spiral of polarization, we must stop treating bureaucrats as…

In Isaiah, God asks, "Whom shall I send?" Isaiah responds, "Lord send me." Sen. Warnok has a video (which I cannot find a link to) that contextualizes Isaiah's call. He called, not to wage war, but to recall the people from the ways of wickedness to the way of God. 1/2

Here's to all the trauma survivors sick of pithy, philosophical quotes about trauma on the internet while they're trying to keep their head above water at their job on a Tuesday. Focus on your self talk, mental focus, & physiology today. The philosophy & drama can wait.

Insulation slows that movement. The direction doesn't matter. It's simply a matter of the temperature difference and the resistance provided by the insulation 2/2

The CNN article is good, thank you But you are not understanding insulation. According to the 1st Law of Thermodynamics, heat moves from warmer regions to cooler. In summer the movement is from outside to inside and vice versa in winter. 1/2

It is classic begging the question to 1. Assert that only matter exists 2. Conclude that any model employing anything immaterial is illegitimate

Been thinking lately about the model of geometry (and math generally) I was taught. 1. Set of assumptions (axioms) accepted for whatever reason, and 2. Rules of inference also accepted for whatever reason (meta-axiom if you will) And I think this model applies to all sorts of things outside math.

"Boys will be boys" is moral cowardice wrapped in gender essentialism. It is an excuse to avoid confronting the social endorsement of male violence and a refusal to admit that the practice of virtue is possible.

All of this. I also want to add that, in my research, I found that a lot of “inconsistencies” in a victim’s story actually came from gender bias affecting investigators’ record keeping and interview methods.
